Practicum Project: PICOT Paper
In health care, the use of evidence–based research is essential to the nursing profession to be able to evaluate and support the decisions of the practice made through the use of research. Nursing shortage is an issue for most institutions that worsen with budget cuts. The preceptor I was shadowing is the Labor and Delivery manager in Valley Hospital. There are various evidence-based practice (EBP) models that are most commonly used in the field of nursing. These EBP models include Funk’s Model of Research Dissemination, Stetler’s Model of Research Utilization and Evidence-Based Practice, DiCenso et al. Model, The Iowa Model, Rosswurm and Larrabee Model, The ARCC Model, and Kitson’s Framework. The similarity across the Stetler’s, DiCenso et al., Iowa, and Rosswurm and Larrabee Model is that the basic steps or phases involved in the model is same. For instance: the first step in these models involves the identification of the problem in a clinical practice; next step is to conduct literature search, gather evidences from research, and compare it to current practice; then the decision is made…

The purpose of this post is to describe the role of nurse leaders in promoting evidence based practice. I will describe strategies used for implementation of change in evidence based practice; discuss the influences that are changing health care culture including current issues and trends, and compare the nursing work group culture with other organizational cultures. An important part of the nursing leader role is to influence the culture and climate in the department (Huber, 2014). Nurse leaders must have an accurate understanding of the culture and climate of their unit to be able to implement change effectively. A leader needs to create a vision that encourages and inspires nurses to take part in the evidence based change.…

I appreciate your contribution to this week’s discussion. I agree about your statement regarding "Mannix, Wilkes, and Daly (2013), as integrative review is the only method that allows for the combination of diverse methodologies, i.e. experimental and non-experimental research, and has the potential to play a greater role in evidence-based practice for nursing." Further, Mannix, Wilkes, and Daly (2013) indicated that clinical leadership features had a clinical focus, a follower and team focus or a personal qualities focus; attributes necessary to sustain supportive workplaces and build the capacity and resilience of nursing workforces. Green, Kishi, and Esperat (2010) suggested that implications for further research are provided which include…

Every patient experiencing pain, including those with substance use disorders (SUDs), needs to be treated with respect, dignity, and high quality service .Thus, both condition s pain and SUDs must be treated effectively. Stigmatization and misconceptions are barriers when providing care for these patients and must be put apart. By the use of evidence-based practice, healthcare professionals and organizations share common therapy goals for pain management in patients at high risk for SUDs. Thus, a PICO question for this agency is elaborated and investigated: Does chronic pain in substance use disorder patients at Miami Rescue Mission Clinic may be reduced by the use of non-opioid drugs or non-pharmacologic therapies? It is clear from the findings of the CCQ and the Francis report that there is a dissonance between professional nursing theory and what actually happens in nursing practice. In order to bridge this gap, it is essential for nurses to understand how to research effectively with the purpose of discovering best evidence which can be applied to nursing practice (Schmidt and Brown, 2012). By using up to date and expert evidence generated from effective research, all healthcare professionals can make good clinical decisions about individual patient care (Greenhalgh, 2010). To develop an understanding and appreciation of the value of research I performed on line module activities which provided me with learning opportunities to develop reflective,…

    A Force Field Analysis

A Force Field Analysis (FFA) is based on the work of a German-American psychologist, Kurt Lewin (1890-1947), to identify factors that can impede change to take place (Bowers, 2010). It is a form of concept change movement which relates to change and patterns of resistance to change, as well as to understand the human behaviour across time (Nagelkerk, 2006). Therefore, Lewin (1951) believes that, change occurs in response to alterations in the equilibrium of the driving and restraining forces within a system (Huber, 2010). Hence, there must be an imbalance between the increasing forces that promote change (driving forces) and decreasing forces that oppose change (restraining forces) to the current situation (Jones, 2007). This will be explained…

The topic that I selected is increasing the evidence based practice use. Evidence based practice (EBP) is one of the popular topics in nursing today. It is defined as a “problem-solving approach to clinical decision making within a healthcare organization that integrates the best available scientific evidence with the best available experiential evidence” (Hain & Kear, 2015, p. 2). Applying evidence based practice into our daily nursing practice can improve the quality of care of the patients.…
