People today are on their phones and computers not being active with others and cannot create real relationships. Using the internet makes us less intelligent. According to Nicholas Carr, “What really makes us intelligent is not our ability to find lots of information quickly”. It is our ability to think deeply about that information. The internet gives us lots of messages and other points of data and every one of these interruptions breaks what were thinking of and leaves us scattered brained. Nicholas Carr What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains: The Shallows asserts that, “The net may well be the single most powerful mind-altering technology that has ever come into general use. It’s the most powerful thing that has come along since the book.” He supports this assertion by saying, “because we’re often using our computers in a social context, to converse with friends or colleagues, to create, “profiles” of ourselves, to broadcast our thoughts through blog posts or facebook updates, our social standing is, in one way or another, always in play.” This paragraph will discuss how the internet is basically “using” and turning our brains into “mush.” The internet is doing this to us because all we do is spend time on the internet.…

The more people rely on the internet, the less we will have to do. Although the internet is a great place to learn about specific topics, events, history, and many more things, it has a negative effect on our brains developmental process. I have a first-hand experience with an issue like this with my nephew. My sister would always let him use her tablet to play games even as a young kid, but she soon realized he was falling behind the learning curve. Once she took away the tablet, he began to pay more attention to people around him and what they were saying.…

In the article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid,” published in 2008 by Atlantic Media Company, allows individuals to perceive differently about the Internet. The author, Nicholas Carr, explains that once he was granted access to the web, his concentration and contemplation is degrading. He mentions that his friends and acquaintances are also having similar experiences and that the anecdotes and experiments for helping this disease rarely prove as much. In my opinion, I would have to agree on his stance because I also believe that the Internet has weakened our mind and potential for greatness. Carr has experienced the effects of searching and surfing online for more than a decade, and his deep reading becomes a struggle.…

Do you feel less intelligent after using the internet? Do you feel that the internet took skills from you? Nicholas Carr, in his article Is Google Making Us Stupid?, claims that through the use of the internet our concentration lessens, as well as our ability to read deeply. He also implies the easily available information makes men intellectually lazy and less studious, in turn weakening their minds. Although I agree with Carr up to a point, I cannot accept his overriding assumption that the internet is completely to blame when people experience these problems.…

I believe that the book, The Shallows: What The Internet Does To Our Brains by Nicholas Carr, is right in most topics. I support the fact that humans in this generation are not as intelligent or focused as the people in the non-technology era. We enjoy summarizing stories and opinions, not thinking about creating time to listen thoroughly about the details in every reasoning. It can benefit us in some ways, but we tend to misuse our power and attempt to find loopholes or corners to cut on the internet. Most things that are created or upgraded these days are enhanced with technology to make them better, such as the maps at malls or self-ordering at fast food restaurants.…

“When we go online, we enter an environment that promotes cursory reading, hurried and distracted thinking, and superficial learning. It’s possible to think shallowly while reading a book, but that’s not the type of thinking the technology encourages and rewards” (116). Today we are not learning we are only memorizing which only lasts a couple of days at the most. It’s the rise of social media and other entertainment that has us hooked. We are no longer incorporating those lifelong skills we once had we are expecting to get the fish without fishing.…

Some feel the need for people to crack down on screen addiction because they compare the U.S to countries like South Korea or China where there already is an epidemic on screen usage. Also, screen time doesn’t just cover the internet, but much more, ranging from phone usage to video games, and just about anything that allows teens to be glued to a screen. Nearly all teens in the U.S own a smartphone, which is one of the biggest enablers of screen addiction.
