Africans weren’t regarded as humans but less than humans based on the color of their skin. However, race is a social construct created by the oppressor in order to uphold the idea of superiority. I feel as though race is now a part of our identity due to the simple fact we were able to reclaim back from our oppressors. Rather than being ashamed of our race we know closely related to our culture and self-identity. In history race has been a key component in oppressing African Americans and Africans. It’s interesting how the reading “The study of the Negro” by Carter Godwin Woodson states
"He teaches the negro that he has no worthwhile past that his race has done nothing significant since the beginning of time"
This is a psychological manipulation of an entire race. Towards the end it says that if you can determine what he will think, you will not need to worry about what he will do. This is almost like Stockholm syndrome. Brainwashing to the extreme by cultivating a systematic racism with in the education system. White oppressors had used their race to justify the dehumanization of African Americans and African people. Therefore, race is a key part of African Americans and Africans to reclaim and embrace the history of what being black
