Entering 12th Degree In High School

Improved Essays
Entering 12th grade was both exciting and scary. I had to start my college applications soon and my portfolio lacked many extra-curricular activities that could help me stand out from other high schoolers. My grades were also average and thus I was worried that most recruiters will ignore my application.

All I wanted to do that summer was to turn my ideas into actions. I had many ideas on events and charities that I could initiate as well as internship opportunities that I could apply for.

During that summer, I reached out to many of my friends as well as family relatives. I started off my asking my friends whether they wanted to team up and start a project such as selling bracelets for charities or going on service trips to help others

Another thing to keep in mind is that some people like to go to college after high school because they get scholarships for either sports like basketball, football, or any other possible sport that you can think of. They go to college so that they can play college basketball or other college sport. So that’s another thing why people can consider going to college after high school is for example if a coach come from Indiana University to come see you play at your high school games and he is interested in you and tells you that we want you to come and play basketball for use for Indiana University. Are you going to accept the offer or are you going to say that I can’t right know because I want to take a year off of before I am ready to go…

Ever since I was little, I’ve always wanted to help people. Being a Boy Scout gave me the opportunity to do so. When I was eight years old I joined the cub scouts which began my life long campaign of helping people. I started off learning to take the oath to serve the people weather it be by the organization or myself. I assisted by selling popcorn for charity organizations ( The San Antonio Food Bank and The Knights of Columbus) or for money that we needed for our camp out trips.…

Upon enrolling in high school I realized that I could no longer put an average effort into easy class work and be rewarded with academic satisfaction. After joining the honors course along with band and the FFA, it was revealed to me that high school was a different culture than middle school. I quickly discovered that hard work would be required to be successful in everything I will ever do. Band demanded countless hours of practice, but I ultimately gained first chair in the top band, as well as squad leader over the trumpet section. Like band, the FFA required hours of dedication, but I distinguished myself from other FFA members.…

Today’s high school curriculums are becoming more and more aimed at college readiness and preparing students for the next step of their lives. With the ACT and other college readiness assessments that we have had to complete, it has been subliminally and deeply ingrained in our minds since the first days of our freshman year that we must attend some sort of higher education after we walk out those lobby doors for the last time. Are we moving towards a society where a college degree is as necessary as a high school diploma is today? In Clive Crook’s article, “A Matter of Degrees” in The Atlantic Monthly, the topic of educational inflation is discussed from the standpoint of inflation being a chronic suffering to many occupations (Crook 28).…

Free from all the extra attention and scrutiny from teachers, who did all they could to mold the freshman class into proper "Vincentians", I felt as though I could finally relax and have a regular high school career. It was a slow paced year where pressures such as ACT and SAT preparation, applying for colleges, and deciding your career path seemed so far away. As long as I remember, I have been on a never ending journey of discovering my talents and finding a career that would be most suitable for me to contribute to society. I was convinced that If just lived life the way I was supposed to and fulfilled my responsibilities, that it all would just come to me one day. Because of my assumption of how much time I had to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, I found myself putting these important thoughts on a hiatus.…

I got the opportunity to do my internship at Houston Methodist West Hospital. I have been working for Methodist for the past 4 years in our registration department and out of those four years, I have had the opportunity to work with 3 different management teams. Although, each of my management teams delivered different methods on how to properly register a patient under 7 min or less, our goal we have always strived for was keeping our patient satisfaction scores at a high. Our organization implemented a strategy called AIDET, (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explain, and Thank you) to make this process work effectively. As our patient were very impressed with our ICARE values, (Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence)…

Do you believe there is a benefit to earning a post-secondary degree? Post-secondary degrees have been around since before America declared independence from Great Britain in 1776. People have always had to go to college to earn a post-secondary degree. Also, colleges today are so expensive because in the 1700’s only rich families could afford to send their kids to college, so the prices of college have not gone down since then. Earning a post-secondary degree will have a positive impact on somebody’s life because there will be more job opportunities, higher incomes, and a longer life expectancy.…

The Value and Purpose of Postsecondary Degrees Students of for-profit colleges are only 11% of America’s higher education population yet they account for 44% of federal student loan defaults because the value of their degree makes them the least desirable to be hired by employers (Harvard Law Review, 2015). This is also a product of aggressive recruiting techniques that target military members by offering a fast, convenient path towards an accredited degree. As it turns out, a degree awarded from a for-profit or “degree mill” university has no more value in the civilian world than a high school diploma and these businesses continue to capitalize on enlisted Sailor’s dreams of furthering their education. Senior Enlisted Leaders (SEL’s) must educate their Sailors about the prerogative of for-profit universities before authorizing a degree plan.…
