The Four Domains Of Charlotte Danielson's Enhancing Professional Practice

Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Teachers are an integral part of the community culture as they continue to shape the next generation of leaders. To aid in standardizing the quality of education, a set of standards have been created. In Danielson’s Enhancing Professional Practice (2nd Edition), Danielson explains the 4 domains, divided into 22 components, from which teachers are evaluated. To educators, Charlotte Danielson’s Domains are considered the main “framework for teaching” that describe the various aspects of teaching. These aspects range from planning and preparation, the classroom environment, instruction, and personal responsibilities. Each domain is equally as important as the other domains, as teaching is a plethora of intertwined skills, which have been cultivated to provide the best possible education for the student. All four domains—and their various sub-domains—are interlinked as well. When one domain is weak it can affect all other domains of teaching, which will prevent the teacher from being successful in providing a quality education. This domain contains all of the “behind the scenes” work that goes into planning a lesson. Domain one is divided into six subdomains including demonstrating knowledge of content and pedagogy, demonstrating knowledge of students, setting instructional outcomes, demonstrating knowledge of resources, designing coherent instruction, and designing student assessments. The sub-categories are meticulously described regarding expectations of a teacher preparing for a lesson.
