A healthcare organization has decided to incorporate a cultural competence initiative into the fabric of the organization. You have been hired as a consultant to begin this process. What initial steps would you recommend?
Cultural competence does not happen unintentionally. An organization should first view diversity as an asset to maximize its effectiveness in working with diverse groups. As critically, the organization must guarantee that its procedure of developing cultural competence has the honest, full, and lasting support of the organization’s leadership. Support of cultural competence must be clarified throughout the organization and community in significant ways, in words and activities.
I would recommend the following initial steps: (a) Request that board members employ key members of the local community (Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, 2014). This is an important first step because they are likely to share thoughtful input and they will have a better knowledge of the community needs and resources.
