12 October 2015 Drug Testing Drug testing is used to find out if a person has drugs present in their body (Perkins, 27 Jan. 2015). It also helps determine the levels of drugs in a person's body (Perkins, 27 Jan. 2015) This laboratory procedure helps find out if a person uses illegal drugs, as well as if they abuse prescription drugs (Perkins, 27 Jan. 2015). There are several different kinds of drug tests, each have their pros and cons. One of the most common types of drug tests is the urine test (Ibid). To make sure person does not substitute his or her urine with somebody else's, the urine's temperature, pH, and creatinine are checked to make sure it was produced no earlier than four minutes before hand (Ibid). Another kind of drug test is a blood test. It helps determine if a certain drug is present or not. It also can report how much of a drug is in a

A reasonable suspicion is when the supervisor or manager notices an employee with certain signs or symptoms that makes them believe the employee is under the influence of something (Ibid). A drug test is taken after an accident happens at the workplace (Ibid). It helps employers determine if drugs were involved. Certain places use random testing (Ibid). This is when a person is picked randomly to get a drug test done (Ibid). There are some states that do not allow employers to do random drug testing however if they aren't in positions that are safety-sensitive (Ibid). Several employers have periodic drug testing, employers are normally told when the drug testing will take place (Ibid). This however, has a disadvantage, employees have enough time to stop using drugs so that their result will not be positive. As of now there is not a federal law that does not allow employers to test employees for drugs

    You make some great points. Personally I am more of a libertarian when it comes to drugs, considering I think what you do on your own time is yours to do with. However, I do not feel drug tests are an invasion of privacy considering most employers are upfront about the requirement of being drug free as a condition of employment for whatever reason the employer might have. I have worked at a couple manufacturing plants that required pre-employment drug testing, random drug test, and required drug testing after being hurt or caused property damage while on the job.
