1. I believe that sporting events contribute significantly to unifying a nation.
Sporting events are a great form of entertainment and attract huge audiences around the world. Spectators either gather at stadiums to watch live events or watch socially on their TV’s. Sports brings out admirable qualities in people such as mutual respect, team play, discipline and fair play.
Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first black President, used sport as a method to unify the country. In the professional sporting industry top athletes are often awarded high value prizes for winning specific events. If an athlete is doping it is much easier for them to be the best in their respective sport and therefore in these top competitions they will be awarded the prize money unfairly. Drug testing identifies whether an athlete is doping and if tests are positive the athlete can be prevented from competing in events. This allows the sport industry to remain unbiased and intact.
2.2 I do believe drug testing is justified at school level. However, in my opinion this should only be done at high school level. It is normally at this stage that students are selected and begin their professional sporting careers. A sports person who is doping is likely to perform more consistently and better than their competitors who are not.
