When he was in the war he developed a drinking problem to deal with the stress of the war and continued to drink when he finally got back home after all of the hard times he went though. Even earlier in his life he would sneak around with alcohol and cigarettes but he eventually remembered the promise he made to God on the raft where he would be faithful to God and give all his problems to Him and not conform to alcohol or drugs. Despite the type of journey Louis went though, he always stayed hopeful, “All I want to tell young people is that you're not going to be anything in life unless you learn to commit to a goal. You have to reach deep within yourself to see if you are willing to make the sacrifices.” (Louis Zamperini) He had a goal to stay alive and with his hard journey he had to make difficult sacrifices to stay alive but it was all worth it when he arrived at his
