Dogs were used in World War I because of their excellent sense of smell, hearing, and agility. Many different types of dog breeds were used in World War I, the most popular dogs were the German Shepherd and the Dobermans Pinscher. How dogs were grouped were based on their strength, trainability, size, and intelligence.
