Each person deserves a peaceful death and no one should have to die alone. Doctor-assisted suicide occurs when a person swallows an overdose of drugs that has been prepared by a doctor for the purpose of causing their own death (Patients Rights Council, 2010). Doctor-assisted suicide has been legalized in some European countries and a few states in the USA (CBC News, 2014). Canada’s government has been negotiating this law for several years and as a result in February 2015 the Supreme Court of Canada said yes for this law and “if the government doesn 't write a new law, the court 's exemption for physicians will stand” (CBC News, 2015). According to the statistics, most Canadians in general agree with the idea of doctor-assisted suicide. “Nine in ten (91%) agree that a person should not be forced to endure drawn-out suffering, and a similar proportion (91%) agree that palliative care is not enough” (Dying with Dignity Canada, 2014, p.6). Furthermore, members of regulated health professions and members from both religious and non-religious sides support assisted dying (85%) and (83%) respectively (Dying With Dignity Canada, 2014, p.4).
In conclusion, in spite of the fact that opponents argue that doctor-assisted suicide shouldn’t be legal in Canada because of progress in medicine, increasing death rate, and opposing views, every Canadian has the right to be removed from life support if he or she chooses.
