Doctor-assisted Suicide Should be Legal in Canada
Each person deserves a peaceful death and no one should have to die alone. Doctor-assisted suicide occurs when a person swallows an overdose of drugs that has been prepared by a doctor for the purpose of causing their own death (Patients Rights Council, 2010). Doctor-assisted suicide has been legalized in some European countries and a few states in the USA (CBC News, 2014). Canada’s government has been negotiating this law for several years and as a result in February 2015 the Supreme Court of Canada said yes for this law and “if the government doesn 't write a new law, the court 's exemption for physicians will stand” (CBC News, 2015). According to Canadian Cancer Society “the median age of cancer diagnosis is between 65 and 69 years of age” (Canadian Cancer Society, 2014, p.28). A health care in Canada is free for some sort of things such as chemotherapy and radiation, but oral cancer drugs who are usually common for this patients, have to be paid from them (Global News, 2014). Senior people who are already retired sometimes have to use their retirement savings to afford this medicines which are around $6,000 per month and usually a treatment can take a year or longer (Global News, 2014), leaving them with all the stress for somehow save their lives or relieve their pain, and sometimes others just give up because they don’t want to bankrupt their families. Of course, a modern medicine can relieve pain and be effective for a short period, but it can’t cure the disease completely and will give more psychological damage for the patient who is worrying on how they are going to pay a treatment and also patients will continue spending money for
