Growing up is Optional When does a person “grow up”? Throughout time, the point at which one grows up has changed. During the Industrial Revolution, children had to have a job and work alongside their parents. During the early 20th century, child marriage was common, and girls and boys in their beginning teen years were often betrothed. These actions forced children to grow up way before they needed to or wanted to. They were already taking that giant step toward becoming an adult. Nowadays, things are different. The world seems to be pushing back the age of adulthood, refusing to grow up. Is it growing up though, or is it just becoming mature. Is there really a point in life when the cartoons need to be turned off and the toys put away? Whereas, growing up tends to be defined by both mind and body. Notwithstanding the fact that most people do not want to grow up, it is commonly thought that one has to. Again, Jen Nicomedes Stone describes society’s view, “There is an unspoken expectation that once you have “grown up”, all things child-like dissipate with that transformation forever.” (Stone par. 8). This meaning that the only thing a person has to look forward to in their future is a career and retirement. Contrariwise, this is not necessarily true. Children are not always allowed to do what they want, and teenagers are self conscious about how they look and act. Adulthood is the perfect time to be free. Just because a person is grown up, it does not mean they have to stop watching Disney movies or reading young adult books. Others may judge, but that is one of the many factors of life that has never ceased to be around and most likely never
