What is the true age of responsibility? This question is addressed by Alan Greenblatt in his article “The Age of Responsibility”(2009), where as a political author he suggests that the age requirement system is outdated. He does this by giving various facts on informative statements on laws regarding age. Through Greenblatt's persuasive statements he supports my argument that there are some restrictions which I do agree need to be changed, but there is still few that are fine the way they. The Government age requirement laws of rental car restrictions are set at a too high of age, however the government does a good job setting the drinking age at twenty one.…

However, being mature isn’t really about being a particular age, but rather going through experiences and learning from them. For instance, in the book “The Glass Castle”, the author Jeannette Walls was forced to take cake of her brother and sister’s because of her unstable mother and father. Maturity is a concept that may be hard to define but can be perceived in multiple ways. Being mature does not necessarily have an age, and it does not just happen overnight. Achieving a level of maturity depends on a person’s sense of responsibility, humility and wisdom. Being a mature person also includes having a sense of self and knowing who you are. Although some may see maturity as being serious rather than silly or an individual having the ability to act responsibly, the key to maturity is putting others before oneself and knowing the difference between what is right and wrong.…

Continuing on, the reason why I believe 21 should be the age of responsibility is because not everyone develops at the same rate. The article “ How Old Is Old Enough” by Catherine Rampell states that “ For one, it has shown different people mature at different rates”. Some teens tend to do stupid things like race their cars or drink when they are not supposed to, but when they get older, they realize that they need a source of income in order to survive. Your parents are not going to be there for the rest of your life, so you have the option of going to college to get a good job or you could get a job with average pay. An ongoing issue in the U.S. today is whether the drinking age should be lowered from 21 to 18. The National Minimum Drinking Age Act was passed by Congress back in 1984 that required states to raise the ability to possess and purchase alcohol from age 18 to age 21. The question is whether or not Congress made a mistake by passing this Act. Although there are some excellent points arguing against a lower drinking age, there are far more reasons to allow 18-year-olds to legally purchase alcohol.…

At eighteen years old, people are considered to be adults and they start their independent journey through life. However, is eighteen the proper age to be considered an adult? Many people believe that the adult age should be moved up because the brain is not fully developed. The brain is very complex, but scientist have discovered many things about the brain; such as brain development in teens to adults. The adult age should be moved up to the age of twenty-five because at twenty-five a person’s brain is fully developed, all the grey matter in the brain is pruned out, and people no longer give into peer pressure.…

When a person sees their friends and others in their same age group, getting married, starting companies or get an advanced degree, etc. they start to measure themselves against these markers. Outside influences can often overwhelm and confuse young people. For example, as mentioned before, in the state of California a person is considered an adult once they turn 18, but not everyone who turns 18 is mature or prepared to make wise choices. However, if a person was considered an adult at the age of 21, it would be understandable because many people at the age of 21 are more likely to be mature. A person should be considered an adult at the age of 21 because by that age they are wiser, have less peer pressure, and are more responsible, on the other hand, someone people, despite their age, are responsible.…
