Should Age Be Considered An Adult?

So, what makes someone be considered an adult when they grow up? When they’re 18, 25 or when they’re above 18, but they’re fully mature before the age of 25. So why do people say the age should be 18, even though there are many 18 year olds who are considered an “adult” but still don’t make the right decisions for themselves and can’t even take care of themselves? Same goes for 25, why should that age be considered an adult? Well the most reasonable answer to determine adulthood is when they’re mature and they’re above the age of 18 and below the age of 25. So when a person is considered an adult is when they’re fully mature based on any age.

When you’re old enough to do responsibility tasks then you’re mature enough to be considered an adult. In Greenblatt’s article he brought up a man Justin McNaull and he “grew up in a hurry. By the time he was 23, McNaull had graduated from, college, married and gone to work for his local police force in Virginia. But McNaull, now 36, still bristles at the memory of something he wasn’t allowed to do at 23: Go down to the airport counter and rent a car.” Justin who is a police officer even stated that “I’d been involved in police pursuits more than 100 mph,”(Greenblatt par. 1) he says, “and yet they still wouldn’t rent me a car”(Greenblatt par. 1). The quote shows that Justin who graduated from college at the age of 23 and now has a job with his local police force, so as an adult he’s shown that he is responsible to be successful on his own. However, it shows that even with him being in the police force and graduated from college he still can't rent a car because he hasn't reached to the required age to rent a car which is 25 in the United …show more content…
In Scaccia’s article she list 5 milestones to be defined as an adult. “completing school, leaving home, becoming financially independent, marrying, and having a child”(Scaccia par. 1).Although the last two milestones isn’t for everyone to do you should still do the first three to become an adult. People who are at the age of 18 are less likely to make decision on their own without any parent aid. In Greenblatt’s article he shows us some scientific research about the brain and says “Using advanced brain-scanning technology, scientists are getting a better view of how the human brain develops than ever before. And what they’ve found is that in most people, the prefrontal cortex and its links to other regions of the brain are not fully formed until age 25”(Greenblatt par. 5). This quote shows us that at the age of 18 our brain isn’t fully developed, however at the age of 25 it is fully developed which is when the prefrontal cortex links with other parts of the brain which helps with our decision making. So when we’re 25 we can make better decision or when our brain is fully

What is the true age of responsibility? This question is addressed by Alan Greenblatt in his article “The Age of Responsibility”(2009), where as a political author he suggests that the age requirement system is outdated. He does this by giving various facts on informative statements on laws regarding age. Through Greenblatt's persuasive statements he supports my argument that there are some restrictions which I do agree need to be changed, but there is still few that are fine the way they. The Government age requirement laws of rental car restrictions are set at a too high of age, however the government does a good job setting the drinking age at twenty one.…

When is a person really considered an adult? When they’re 18 or when they have become responsible for themselves. In my opinion, A person typically has become an adult when they have fully matured, when they have become responsible for themselves, and become financially stable. I believe this because in most cases people who are dependent on others financially and physically aren’t responsible. If someone who isn’t matured and cannot be serious in certain situations is considered an adult then that is wrong to me.…

While some people believe that 18 to 24 year olds should never be tried as adults, I believe that they should. By the time you hit 18, you have lived and learned enough to know what’s right, and what’s wrong. All your life, you’ve grown up learning do’s and the don’ts of pretty much everything. While they may not have been as extensive as they are today, they are still things that we should have carried on with us into our later years of life. Almost everyone looks forward to the day that they turn 18.…

There are many different opinions on the age of responsibility and adulthood. In Alan Greenblatts article, “What is the Age of Responsibility?”, he discusses how people often think 18 is too young to be considered an adult but yet there are many contradictions against the claim. With so many factos influencing what people think maturaity means, people should be considered adults at 18 because that is when teens start experiencing adult things and start making real life decisons. The age of maturity should be measured not by age but by the persons life experiences. Robert Epstein, a psychologist, completed a study with, “... More than 30,000 people showing that 30% of American teens are more competent than the median adults in a variety of ways”.…

It is practically unconstitutional for the government to exert the right to send its youth to death, for a country that you can’t even toast to if you are under 18.…

Imagine being an adult eighteen-year-old that just moved from Puerto Rico, where the age of drinking alcohol was eighteen. As you can imagine, after moving to the United States, he was very confused because now he could no longer have access to alcohol. Many people think that the drinking age of 21 should be lowered to eighteen. Others oppose that idea and think that humans are not of the right maturity to consume alcohol within a reasonable manner. When you reach the age of eighteen, you are now considered an adult in the United States, and adults should have the right to make their own decisions about anything and especially about alcohol consumption.…

Adults but not adults at the age of 18 How are we adults, if we’re not seen as adults? In the United States, the age of adulthood is 18. At the same time, people are restricted from being able to consume alcohol, in a responsible way. If we are declared adults at 18 we should have the right to decide if we drink or not. The minimum legal drinking age should be lowered to 18 because 18 is the age of adulthood in the United States, you can do everything in the world but you're prohibited to drink, and less laws will be broken because people will be more responsible while making wise choices.…

Many parents of today's teenagers were legally allowed to drink at the age of eighteen. Today's teenagers face more responsibility and are treated much differently from the way their parents were treated. If twenty-one is considered so mature, then why is eighteen considered an adult? At the age of eighteen, an individual can vote, serve on a jury, stay out without a curfew, leave home, drive, smoke, buy weapons, engage in financial contracts, fornicate, start a family, be sent to adult prison, join the army, and die for this country. If an eighteen year-old can be held to so many responsibilities, then it seems unfair to say that they are not old enough to drink.…

With new breakthroughs and research conducted surrounding the development of the human brain, it has been discovered that the brain does not finish fully maturing until the mid twenties (Simpson). This demonstrates how individuals can not make the best decisions at such an age, like 18. In an article published on CNN, titled 21: Science’s Limit When it Comes To The Drinking Age, Jen Christensen writes that in teenage years,”Neurons in the brain are growing and strengthening, connecting are developing to allow the brain to transmit information faster and allow the brain to process more complex thoughts… [This] means that young people have lapses in judgement during this time period as they try to figure out how to be…

Alana Picard Mr. Santaella Enc 1101 31 August 2017 Society Changes Robin Henig who wrote “What is it About 20-Somethings?” argues that the twenties are a developmental stage for humans that comes before adulthood. She states that to be an adult, a person must have a degree, be married with children, be financially independent, and have moved out. While in 1960 that may have been the case, in 2017 it is not. The economy is nothing like it was in the 60’s, lifestyles have also changed significantly since then and for a person to move out of their parents house these days is nearly impossible until they have a stable and well paying job. Robin says that “reaching adulthood is happening later than ever” (Henig) which I, personally disagree with.…

For example, as mentioned before, in the state of California a person is considered an adult once they turn 18, but not everyone who turns 18 is mature or prepared to make wise choices. However, if a person was considered an adult at the age of 21, it would be understandable because many people at the age of 21 are more likely to be mature. A person should be considered an adult at the age of 21 because by that age they are wiser, have less peer pressure, and are more responsible, on the other hand, someone people, despite their age, are responsible.…
