Personal Narrative: My Personal Budgeting

When we were first assigned this assignment, I thought it would be impossible to complete. I myself was in the process of developing my own personal budget for the upcoming semester and was facing difficulty in trying to find ways to make my student loans last the whole semester. However, the difference is that I am responsible for feeding only one person, and I have more than $35 to spend on food for a week. Therefore, I started out this assignment with a great deal of doubt. I began meal planning by looking at the weekly coupons sent to me by my local Ralph’s. I quickly realized however, that Ralph’s was much too expensive. Just trying to buy meat alone exceeded the $5 dollar per day budget. I was under the impression that they only supplied their customers with canned or processed food items; I was not aware that they had such a variety of food products, and fresh produce nonetheless. But the trick I soon learned about the 99 Cent Store is that there is never consistency with the products that they carry and different stores will have different products. For instance, one week the store can have great quality produce and meat, and then the next week they will not. Thus, trying to feed a family with items solely form the 99 Cent Store might be difficult if items are not available when they are needed. As a way to combat this inconsistency, I decided that my family would have their own vegetable garden so that they can plan, control, and organize what produce items are available and when. In addition, my mother maintains a vegetable garden and not only does she harvest so much produce, but it all tastes much better than what is available in a grocery store and is free of harmful …show more content…
I spent hours looking for the cheapest prices and the best bargains and had to go to several different locations in order to find food products within my budget. I also had to perform numerous mathematical computations in order to determine which item was the most cost efficient. I can only imagine how much more difficult this process would be if I did not have transportation or was lacking the education to calculate my budget. Often times, it is the low income families that are lacking the transportation or education and in these cases, additional effort would need to be taken to overcome these additional
