Personal Narrative: Living On A Dollar A Day

In my perspective, as a 16 year old girl, I think that the Earth owns us. I like to think of the Earth a buffet, and the people in the buffet keep going back for more and more seconds. Looking back through the lessons and topics we’ve discussed over the past couple weeks, I find it very interesting that I have been overlooking myself. I have been proved time and time again that I too, am a wasteful, materialistic, consumer. But how can I help it? Today’s society is making it offly difficult to not want stuff and to not waste it either. For example the documentary, “Living On A Dollar A Day”, was a huge culture shock and I wasn’t even there in real life. Just looking at and imagining how my life would be like there, blows my mind. It’s hard to think that’s even possible to live that way (not trying to sound like I don’t know others have less unfortunate situations than me). I feel spoiled and blessed to be where I’m at but yet I feel ungrateful and selfish when I see others who aren’t put in the same situations and circumstances I have been. The world we’re living in has turned into a place where the more stuff you have, the …show more content…
I wouldn’t pepper spray someone or trample people to get it but if I had it, I wouldn’t be complaining. The news stories of people dying or being seriously injured by someone, for example, really wanting a great deal on a PS4 makes me sick to my stomach. OK yes, everyday people day from unfortunate and stupid accidents but come on, someone gets killed for a sale on a MATERIAL OBJECT is a joke! Honestly, how is that even a thing that’s happened before? It really makes you think, how bad do you really want it? It’s like those times when you were a kid and you mom said “no” to you and you’d throw a huge fit about it. It’s seems like adults are missing that and are reverting back to their old ways, doing everything they can to get what they want, even if they are told

The Bible states, “And again I say unto you, it is easier for a camel to go through a needles eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.” Today, people are swaying away from this statement because the advancement of technology and what the media is putting in their heads. Richard Restak, in his essay, “Attention Deficit: The Brain Syndrome of Our Era” explains “And by responding, I mean that our brain literally changes its organization and functioning to accommodate the abundance of stimulation forced on it by the modern world”. While the technological stimulation affects a change in the way our brains operate, it also affects this change in our desires and values. Technology and media are reshaping our minds to believe the most important aspects of life are…

Every Life Matters I really only started understanding the meaning of abortion once one of my mom’s friends had one. Before that I had very little knowledge about abortion. My parents have always taught me to stand by what I believe and that others may have different beliefs. They always told me that I would meet people that would disagree with me and what I believe not only when it came to these kind of topics but many other things as well. Being told that, they told me to always respect people’s beliefs and their points of view because everyone has the right to stand by what they believe, just like I do.…

I have learned many things from my experience of being in two extreme countries. I experienced life in Africa, where I saw people were struggling to make a living, people living in extreme poverty. On the contrary, I experienced life in America where people were living a wasteful life. But I believe that we meet the poor and the rich everywhere. Which category of life do we belong to?…

Climate change has been one of the most important global issues for over the decade now. There is no doubt that it is happening, although there is still a lot of debate going on whether global warming is real. Monica Hesse and Michael Pollan bring up the important points about the environment, causes of climate change, and possible solutions in their essays “Greed in the Name of Green” and “Why Bother?”. The moods of the two essays are clearly different. Hesse’s sarcastic tone, derides and decries our misinterpret attitude towards solutions of the climate problem, therefore, showing us the ways we can change it, in the hope that we will consider altering the ways we live.…

When I got my number and was waiting at the starting line I felt nervous. I have never been apart of anything like that so I didn't know what to expect, but I felt confident that I was going to be able to complete with ease.…

Logos: This is a prominent figure throughout Hill’s argument. His most observable use of logos, or logic, is turning himself into the example that consumerism leads to further problems later in life. In one of Hill’s direct claims to his audience, he states that “Intuitively, we know that the best stuff in life isn’t stuff at all, and that relationships, experiences, and meaningful work are the staples of a happy life” (213).…

The waste is being thrown away which makes a huge impact on our environment and the condition of our lives along with fauna and flora. We should take a full responsibility for our acting today as “current generations are not bearing the full costs of their affluent lifestyle” (Taylor et al. 2009, p. 138). The consequences may be tragic unless the consumer society, we live in now, will take care of changing our bad…

Everyone remembers the experience when they first learned the difference between being rich and poor, a gap that seems to be characterizing the American society nowadays. When Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence about “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” (par 2) he probably did not think Americans would attempt to pursue happiness through material belongings. For some people, it seems to be more important to mist themselves with Chanel and accessorize with Louis Vuitton, than to have a nice meal on the table every night. The bigger problem is that new parents are subconsciously implementing these morals into their children, who will grow up to believe that people are defined by what they have, and that they can achieve…

When I look at today 's world, it is hard to imagine another field that is going to change our society as much as computer technology does. I believe in the vision illustrated in Jeremy Rifkin 's book “The Zero Marginal Cost Society” that the emerging technology infrastructure – the Internet of Things (IoT) – will connect everyone and everything, use Big Data, analytics and algorithms to increase productivity and efficiency, and lower the marginal cost of producing and sharing to near zero. I feel excited to contribute to this great age of evolution. There are two fields in which I am particularly interested and want to make contributions. 1) Machine Learning.…

Most people value money way more than they should; sometimes more than a life and it becomes worse as we keep developing new technologies. Additionally, these newer technologies and our improper use of them are a cause of the problems we are having in the environment both directly and indirectly. All of these products like the iPod that Jason throws away can create toxic waste harmful to both nature and humans. They are also making us, as humans, increasingly lazy. These days, there are devices for younger people that prevent them from having to walk even though they are more than able.…

When in reality, a mere convenience will do nothing to contribute to anyone’s level of happiness. The secular urges lead us to believe that having the ‘best’ is a necessity, although any product we buy will only grant us temporary happiness. The insistence to purchase the leading product is solely a sales tactic used by companies in order to compel the public to buy their product. However, once the product is purchased, we easily become bored with it and move onto the next best thing. Such as buying the latest smart phone, and then purchasing the new, updated model next year.…
