Democratic. People oriented, democratic leadership focus on human relations and teamwork. Unlike authoritarian leaders with absolute power, control, and demand respect, democratic leaders value and rely upon employee involvement, participation, and decision-making. Decentralized, democratic leaders prefer cooperation and harmony within teams. In developing a team atmosphere, a democratic leader is unselfish in sharing information and fostering communication, creativity, and innovation to motivate his or her team. Although small in scope, Cunningham, Salomone, and Wielgus (2015) conducted a study of six project management leadership styles and the data from the 61 participants indicated a preference for the democratic leadership style. In studying leadership styles, Eken et al., (2014) noted that the democratic leadership style was used more often and more favored in their study. Research reveals positive democratic leadership attributes. Giltinane (2013) noted democratic leaders believe employees are intrinsically motivated and seek opportunities to prove themselves. Consequently, democratic leaders share responsibility with their followers and they strive for cooperation, collaboration, and a team consensus. With a desire for high group involvement, Eken et al. (2014) noted democratic leaders avoid introducing self-interest as a primary focus, and instead concentrate on developing team collaboration and consensus.
