Mentorship Through the Lens of Servant Leadership: The Importance of Accountability and Empowerment start off by giving a negative description associated with the Millennial Generation at the higher learning level. The article then highlight the possibility of linking quality mentorship through the lens of servant leadership as missing link to connecting purpose to content in college classrooms (Baker et al, 2017, p. 21). Next the article explains the study conducted to identify student’s perceptions of servant leadership in personal mentors at the beginning and end of the Fall 2014 Freshman Orientation course (Baker et al, 2017, p. 21). The article then explained the two objectives established to direct the study and the common issues that first year student experience. The survey identified accountability and empowerment as the two-servant leadership trait that were ranked the highest amongst freshman for mentors. Forgiveness score the lowest out of the servant leaderships traits amongst freshman for mentors. The article places a twist on servant leadership by injecting Van Dierendonck and Nuijten eight characteristics into a survey to determine the perception from millennial generation freshman. The concepts are place into the hands of the students to determine the association to their mentor. From the article and textbook, I learned that there are multiple ways to define servant leadership. Northouse (2016) stated, “rather than using their power to dominate others, leaders should make every attempt to share their power and enable others to grow and become autonomous” (p. 239).
