The College of Business (COB) at Grand Canyon University represents a mission to provide growth and guidelines to all academic learners. The three pillars in the COB are servant leadership, entrepreneurial spirit, and innovation. The GCU pillars are solid building blocks and a foundation for all learners and students who wish to carry forward with academics learning. The pillars convey GCU’s priority to set the highest academics standards and level for opportunist to move forward with his/her professional career after graduating from Grand Canyon University and the College of Business. The core components or pillars are an important aspect for graduate students to understand the values of representation, guidelines, and principles associated with each pillar. The first pillar that the College of Business embraces is servant leadership. According to Robert Greenleaf, “As a servant leader, you’re a “servant first” – you focus on the needs of others, especially team members, before you consider your own.” The values of servant leadership begin within the organization. Leadership must embrace the cultural needs for its survival. Sometimes, the definition is misunderstood because it is not a style of management but a culture within the organization. Key leaders must have the respect by his/her employees and colleagues to apply the methodology of servant leadership. One example of a visionary who applied servant leadership was Corazon C. Aquino who was 11th president of the Philippines. In addition, she was the first female president in her country to successfully hold office from 1986-1992. …show more content…
Aquino applied the unique concepts and cultures of servant leadership to the entire Asian country. After much turmoil of previous presidencies, the President Aquino wanted to help her citizens to improve the well-being and reputation of the country. The act of servant leadership helped shape the country and “the idea that self-management requires deep spirituality lived integrally (and sustained by an interior or inner life)” (Udani & Lorenzo, p. 373). The value of servant leadership sets the stage and expectation of students who take part of the College of Business at Grand Canyon University. Besides servant leadership, entrepreneurial spirit is a key component to be an effective leader within your industry. Many learners in their academic career hold a passion to strive to be an innovator within his/her field of expertise. The learners become leaders of industries setting the standards for individual organizations. “Corporate entrepreneurship is an exciting topic that generates significant attention in both academic and practitioner circles” (Todorovic, p. 82). Although, corporate entrepreneurship is vital for business to expand on initial concepts, another key relationship is entrepreneurial orientation. Entrepreneurial orientation or EO is a strategic orientation that captures an organization practices, leadership philosophies, and analysis to improve standards and expectations as leaders within their industry. The spirit of corporate and entrepreneurial orientation begins with fundamentals that are inherent by leaders. In addition, the entrepreneurial individual will have a structured ideology of innovation that can help companies succeed. The innovation allows individuals and students to become more open with thoughts and ideas that strive for higher academic learning and professional success. The last of the GCU pillars represents innovation to their students at the College of Business.
