I am a slave from South Carolina. I am sure I speak on behalf of all my enslaved brothers and sisters when I say that slavery in any form should be outright illegal and with your help unconstitutional. Slavery is what we all as Americans what we experienced from our former mother country before the revolution except what form of slavery we experience working under our masers. Slavery is absolutely an unjust evil filled with hate against us negroes. Our arguments can already be made for us from your own Declaration of Independence.
In the Declaration it is said that "That every man is created equal"1, I take this to mean that I should be equal to every delegate reading this as they are my equal as well. I also take it to mean that every man is born with the same God-given rights to be whatever he works for and that no person shall be assigned a social status based on their race or gender. We are simply treated as cattle to our owners, if a slave were to try and escape his torments of captivity if not killed by his owner when found he would be beaten or whipped then branded by his owner so others would know of his origins if he escaped again. Last week my cousin was given 5 lashes of a whip for accidentally breaking a few eggs while collecting them. How could you justify to me such a harsh and cruel punishment for something so minor. Sometimes us slaves are beaten and tormented for jest by our owners for they are simply bored. If you become injured from the beating you are still expected to work through you injury and work well because if we don’t we will be punished even more harshly for this offense which is not our own fault. Why is it up to the delegates that we are subject to this cruelty? Are you not men of God or
