Container Store Job Analysis

There are several job design strategies that would be beneficial to the employees at the Container Store. Job rotation is the movement of employs from one job to another to prevent boredom (Ferrell, Hirt, & Ferrell, 2009). This strategy would be great because employees working on a sales floor would benefit from rotating department. This would also help all employees become familiar with all aspects of the business and all the products that the store sells.
Flexible scheduling strategies would also be beneficial to the employees. The concept of job sharing allows two part-time employees to work one full-time job. This would be beneficial for employees that are students or mothers that have to pick-up children from school. The Container Store has done an excellent job of incorporating these aspects of job enrichment into the jobs; however, there is always room for improvement. Since many of the employees work in the sales field, it would be helpful to have a salesperson of the month. This should come with a special parking place, a badge or name of a board that allow customers to know that this person is salesperson of the month, and a special reward. This can be a gift certificate to a nice restaurant, a spa, or a choice. Another way to incorporate job enrichment into the job is to allow employees to assist in the layout of their department. Each employee is responsible for their area or department and everything in that area. They do not have to go to their supervisor for every decision, like ordering a new product that the employee feels would be a great addition to the store.
