Introduction New Belgium Brewing Company is an award winning brewery that is known for its craft beers and environmentally friendly facilities. NBB has taken brewing to a new level by implementing high quality assurance in operations management, growth through employee stock ownership, and sustainability in environmental responsibility.
Operations Management
New Belgium started from modest beginnings. The company was started by Jeff Lebesch and his wife Kim Jordan in the basement of their house. By beginning with a small market they were able to focus on quality, not quantity. Every level of production is monitored for quality. Receiving the hops, brewing, and bottling are all closely and constantly checked for quality. Another way the New Belgium Brewing Company has monitored quality and productivity is by involving their employees in all aspects of the company. After a year of employment employees become employee-owners. This gives them a continued interest in the success of the company. NBB implements a horizontal hierarchy which enables its employees, making all employees area leaders. This creates an environment where each individual is responsible for maintaining a high quality in their own area (New Belgium Brewery – Information, 2012, para. 4). The New Belgium Brewing Company uses this method of management to maintain high productivity and quality despite the size of the company.
Employee Stock Ownership Program January 17th, 2013 marked a special day for the New Belgium Brewing Company. It announced that the company’s Employee Stock Ownership Program (ESOP) had purchased the balance of the company shares making it 100% employee-owned (New Belgium Brewing Company, 2013, para. 1). Typically, with an increase in pride you will see improvement reflected in their work. They will work more efficiently, as well as make less mistakes. Mistakes can hurt the overall product and bottom line which directly affects the pocket books of the individual employee. Employees may feel more inclined to check their work thoroughly to prevent any issues that may arise and not rely on others to check their work. This extra care correlates directly with the benefits of employee-owners. The employee-owners enhance the quality of their own work as they are reviewing their work before moving along.
