1. Discuss the organizational structure at Cisco Systems. Explain and discuss each one of the current structural dimensions. Explain and discuss each one of the current contingency factors. The organizational structure of Cisco System was hierarchical. Over the years it had achieved a shift in its authoritative structure. IT functions of Cisco were changed from decentralized to centralized following the globalization. An extreme focus was paid on horizontal integration and cross functional teaming. As a result of globalization the business structures became more complex.
Reengineering is done in order to achieve horizontal collaboration in an organization. In reengineering, structure created around cross functional core processes. Self-directed teams form the basis of performance and design of the organization. Owners of the process have the responsibility of core process. Employees area given tools and authority to make decision central to team performance. Culture is open and based on trust. Advantages of this structure are that it promotes flexibility, team work and active responses to customer needs, every employee have a deep insight of organization’s goals and directs employees towards production and delivery of values. The structure evolved from divisional, functional, geographic, matrix, horizontal, virtual network structure and now to hybrid structure. The process of evolution resulted from need of decentralization and then as a product of globalization.
The structure which is prevailing today is hybrid structure. Large organizations use hybrid structure. It combines the features of division, geographic, horizontal and network structure. It is used in the organizations which are rapidly changing as it provides flexibility. The advantage of hybrid structure is that it reduces the layers of reporting thus declining the efficiency of the organization, modifies the complexity, provides flexibility and provides shared mission.
