We have an understanding that the Bit O’ Fizz company has been built around a functional structure, which we are able to determine through observing that the companies staff team and seeing how they have been split into a number of subunits which have been set depending on the skill set and knowledge of each individual in the group. For example there is a Vice President of Marketing, and a Manager of Marketing too. This shows that there is a functional structure.

Source of Authority: They have strictly outlined who to report to and how things should be done for specific tasks. At Bit O’ Fizz’s there are levels of management and that creates a hierarchy of power.
Number of Rules and Procedures: They have many strict rules and procedures that have been set by the President. Some rules and procedures include that the vice president interacts directly with his or her subordinates and only interacts with other departments during a formal meeting. This makes communication more difficult and the lack of sharing ideas.
Span of Control: They have a narrow span of control. We can see this as there are many levels of management with each of them having specific responsibilities. This means that lower level employees rely on superiors and are not able to come up with idea or share them.
Execution of Tasks: They have many departments each dealing with specific tasks that need directions from a hierarchical management system. This means employees are not encouraged to use problem solving skills by themselves. By bringing in scalar’s principal states that there should be an unbroken chain of command that links every person in the organization with a higher level of authority which means sharing ideas would be easier.
Reduced Unity of Command: The employees report to their manager and there manger reports to their manger up the chain of command. If they were to reduce the unity of control, the lower level employees would be able to communicate to the higher level staff much faster. This increases productivity and reduces wasted time.
Increased Empowerment: One thing that the company does not do is let the lower level employees work on projects by themselves but instead they have to report everything to their manager. If you increase empowerment lower level employees would have more power over projects because mangers have given over the power to them. This also means, giving all the resources and power to lead others over to the staff that is now taking charge and report back when the project has been complete.
