These rulers are an influential part in the development of history. This can be seen in the decree to innovate, explore new lands, and create reforms during their reign. The key idea to these rulers is that they had power. These rulers had control over their governments which allowed for them to be a dominant part in society. Rulers like Ramses II who commissioned great architectures in Ancient Egypt or Pericles who reformed citizenship in Ancient Athens. These people had the power to control, thus having the power to remember. As long as this power continues through the generations, so will the legacy of monarchy. What today’s monarchy lacks is this sense of power over their designated society. How will a person ever be an influence if that very person was not a part of it in the first place? Although the history of monarchy will continue in textbooks and in the effects on society, the overall effect of modern day monarchs will be lost. As democracy becomes more prominent in countries, the idea of a single figure to have all the power in a nation pales in comparison to the “power to the people”. Citizens want democracy and are taught to prefer it at schools. It is seen as the ultimate form of government which deters the existence of any other form of government. Monarchy’s influence declines with the power it holds and the amount of people that support it. There is just no demand or need for monarchy which would lead to its disappearance. Although the royal family will continue to live on, the need for them and their status is just something the world has no use for anymore.
