Romeo and Juliet Essay by Skylar Spencer
Couples today compared to couples in Romeo and Juliet’s time period were very different. Dating has definitely changed over time. In Romeo and Juliet, there were many factors that played a similar role as in the love stories today. I think age does play a role in decision-making, just like in the story. Back then, in Romeo and Juliet’s time, girls got married at a really young age. They didn’t live as long, so they got married and had kids early. Today, people wait until they get older. Juliet had to listen to her father because she was still young and had to marry whoever he wanted her to. Teens today don’t really listen to their parents when they tell them who they can date or marry. When

Weddings in the twenty-first century are quite different than what would have taken place in the time of Romeo and Juliet. Marriage has changed tremendously since Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet; arranged marriage has vanished, marriage customs have changed, and how much goes into preparing a wedding. In the fifteenth century most marriages were arranged by parents or relatives not by marriage. The purpose of arranged marriage was to transfer land and ownership or peace treaty between two families or groups.…

Throughout the play both Romeo and Juliet face opposition from not only from their feuding families but also from the friar and the nurse as well. There is this notion that the inability of the older generation to understand the passion and commitment of the young lovers drove them to make rash and heedless decisions. When Capulet finds that Juliet is saddened instead of thrilled about her soon to be marriage to Paris, he responds, “Hang thee, young baggage! disobedient wretch! I tell thee what: get thee to church o ' Thursday, Or never after look me in the face: Speak not, reply not, do not answer me” (Scene 3, Act 5, 160-168.1).…

Romeo and Juliet should have listened to their parents who had told them that Montagues and Capulets are off limits to date. It was a shocking decision for Romeo and Juliet to “fall in love” after only knowing each other one day because their are too young to know what love is. However Romeo and Juliet still got married and did not tell their parents because did not care. Which is why parents should have strict control over who their kids can date. When Juliet is forced to marry Paris (in Act III scene 5) on Thursday she should have told her parents that she was already married to Romeo (could not be married to two people), but instead she makes a awful decision and does not tell her parents.…

Would Romeo & Juliet have been able to sustain their passion? Of course not. It would have morphed into a more mature affection, or withered. It never got a chance to do either, not because of the young lovers, but because of the feud which separated their families. Juliet’s attitude toward marriage changes from not even thinking about marriage at all, then meeting Romeo and falling in love, and last getting married to Romeo. In the beginning Juliet says “It is an honor that I dream not of” meaning she does not want to get married right now. Toward the middle of the story Juliet tells Romeo that she is in love with him, she says “My bounty is as boundless as the sea, my love as deep. The more I give to thee.” meaning that she really is in love with Romeo.…

In Conclusion, I think that Romeo is a young, inexperienced and impatient but loyal and brave boy. I think that his naivety plays a huge rule in this because love was taken as an extravagant feeling to have when it was not truly happy as the lovers can experience heartbreak and many other obstacles. It seems as if Romeo only more cautious and deliberate, his devastating ending could have been prevented (even though we have not finished the book yet). Amongst friends especially Mercutio, Romeo shows signs of his social and quick witted persona, even with his fond of verbal jousting that is mainly about sex. Lastly, Romeo is like every other male in the world who only unveils their true self to the people who they trust or who understand them.…

This statement has perpetually been a contentious issue, as plenty would believe that Romeo and Juliet is the finest love story of all time whilst others will argue that the story is not of love, but of lust.
