With a wide bright smile he gets down on one knee and asks for your hand in marriage. Without thinking twice you say no. You say no because you just met this man three days ago. The man instantly frowns because the woman he thought he loved just turned him down. Today in society woman are able to make choices depending on how they feel. Marriage is now about love. It's about choice. No one could say that you had to marry someone or you couldn't marry a certain person. Your father and the community had no choice in who you marry. In the past a father would choose who their daughter marries. A son had a bit more of a choice but they couldn’t marry anyone that would make their status worse. Meaning they can’t marry anyone below them. Marriage was never an individual choice. Their is proof in this because marriage was never legally binded it was just accepted by society, the community needs to approve of the marriage, the community was always a huge part of the marriage. …show more content…
It was just accepted by society. In Romeo and Juliet only the nurse and friar lawrence knew about it. This means that since only two people knew about it it may not be categorized as a binding marriage. Also since Juliet's father never approved of it or talked to Romeo it may not be a marriage and Juliet may have to marry someone else. This means it was never Juliet's decision to marry Romeo because her father never approved of Romeo which means it's not her individual choice. Nowadays the man does not have to get permission from his future wife's father, but it is respectful to do so. Society does not have to accept the marriage in today's time

Women were to be married off to men that would support them and be able to care for a family. Love wasn’t the primary focus in choosing a partner; rather, a woman was looking for a financially stable man who could father her children, so that the family line would continue. To marry solely out of love would be looked down upon if it meant not marrying into the appropriate social class. A good respectable family would have consisted of a hard-working, business man father, a respectable, stay-at-home, housewife mother, and their children, which were especially good if they were boys. For a woman to marry and not bare children, marry into an unsuitable family, or to not marry at all where all considered inappropriate choices for a women and were highly…

We can apply STANDPOINT THEORY to this interaction between Noah and Allie. Allie finds herself in love with two very different people. Noah, who was her first love, and was the one that her family didn’t approve of because they felt that he was “trash” and not “suitable” for her. Lon, who is her current love and fiancé, and happens to be very wealthy and the type of man that her family finds suitable for her. Allie is in love with both men but doesn’t know what she is going to do or how she will pick between the man with the social status that she knows her family approves of and wants for her or picking the man that her family has already decided wasn’t good enough for her.…

Weddings in the twenty-first century are quite different than what would have taken place in the time of Romeo and Juliet. Marriage has changed tremendously since Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet; arranged marriage has vanished, marriage customs have changed, and how much goes into preparing a wedding. In the fifteenth century most marriages were arranged by parents or relatives not by marriage. The purpose of arranged marriage was to transfer land and ownership or peace treaty between two families or groups.…

Romeo and Juliet Essay by Skylar Spencer Couples today compared to couples in Romeo and Juliet’s time period were very different. Dating has definitely changed over time. In Romeo and Juliet, there were many factors that played a similar role as in the love stories today. I think age does play a role in decision-making, just like in the story. Back then, in Romeo and Juliet’s time, girls got married at a really young age.…

Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare began and ended with death, but the story continues to live on. Romeo and Juliet was written in 1500’s and showed how relationships worked back then and how Shakespeare saw relationships. It is important to use lenses because, “The different lenses also allow critics to focus on particular aspects of a work they consider important.” (McGinn research, via Tyson, Richart). The relationship lense is looking at the different types of relationships and see how they affect the story or the characters.…

The author through this stories showed that this is a tradition that dates back centuries and most Indian families that still believe this one of the ways that can preserve their “Indian-ness” especially those living in the United States. It is also worth pointing out that while Vinay, and Vibha’s parents are arranging marriages spouse for them, they still allowed them autonomy and the ability to walk away from a person they are not comfortable with. I believe this is some positive improvement from days when the children didn’t even have a say in the choice of their partners. While most of the parents said it worked for them, and that young adults are often focused on not so important things like appearance when selecting a spouse often necessitating the need for parents to step in, I believe the couple should still be allowed to make this decision though with some…

Not only arranged marriages, but if the parents of the husband felt the wife were doing wrong or not living up to their standards then “parents could force a son to divorce his wife.” Coontz also described how “couples were not to put their feelings for each other above more important commitments, such as their ties to parents, siblings, cousins, neighbors, or God.” As for the role of the husband and wife in the marriage, Coontz explains how those who married in some cultures were not to be married for love. The love part of the relationship would grow within time. It was also a negative thing for a man and woman to have “excessive love.”…

In Conclusion, I think that Romeo is a young, inexperienced and impatient but loyal and brave boy. I think that his naivety plays a huge rule in this because love was taken as an extravagant feeling to have when it was not truly happy as the lovers can experience heartbreak and many other obstacles. It seems as if Romeo only more cautious and deliberate, his devastating ending could have been prevented (even though we have not finished the book yet). Amongst friends especially Mercutio, Romeo shows signs of his social and quick witted persona, even with his fond of verbal jousting that is mainly about sex. Lastly, Romeo is like every other male in the world who only unveils their true self to the people who they trust or who understand them.…
