Since Romeo and Juliet takes place in the fifteenth century, courtship is the primary dating custom. Usually, a father arranged for the daughter to court, or date, a person whom he thought would be a good provider for his daughter. Most of the time, the father picks a young man who has a wealthy family so his daughter could have an easy life. Courtship is a very conservative dating style, and was practiced by most people in the fifteenth century (GaleGroup). The rules of courting are as follows; boys are expected to call their girlfriends every day to check on them, and see them a certain number of times a week. If the boy has plans for the day, he is supposed to tell the girl so she would know where he was at if she needed to talk to him. Promise rings are very common because if one is in courtship, the couple would most likely end up married. In Romeo and Juliet, the wedding preparations took place in Act IV, when Capulet was arranging the date, time, and place for the ceremony. Today’s marriages take place almost a full year after the engagement, to allow for various preparations. However in the play, Juliet and Paris were scheduled to get married in the same week Capulet gave Paris permission to marry Juliet.
