Description:
As I arrived to Lansdale Catholic high school I pulled into a large parking lot with a beautiful field out back. The high school was fairly small, 2 floors with about 6 hundred students total. Each grade had approximately 150 students, the freshman grade being the largest. The school only has one nurse present during the day who handles all the students and faculty. The nurses room is located on the first floor near the lunchroom, and is also attached to the main office where the secretary, principle, and vice principle are located. The location of the office is a little odd because it is not located at the main entrance of the building; however, having the nurses office attached to the main office is convenient when sending sick children home and filing paperwork. The school nurse has a lot of different responsibilities during the day. They are responsible for all the medical charting of each student; making sure all their immunizations are up to date, their physical forms are completed, and emergency contact information is up to date. The nurse must make sure each student has an individualized roaster number and that number is present on all paperwork. Also the nurse is responsible for all the defibrillator equipment, making sure the pads are not expired and that all machines are working properly. Every morning the nurse turns on each defibrillator to make sure it’s working. Lansdale catholic has three; one on the first floor, two on the second floor. The nurse is also responsible for all the screenings of the students. Every year each student must have their height and weight checked, their hearing, and their vision. The nurse attempts to get all these assessments done at the beginning of the year but sometimes they don’t get everyone till the spring time. The nurse is also responsible for treating all students and facility in need of medical attention. The nurse treats everything from a scrap, to a stomachache, to administering daily medications. In my experience with the school nurse we saw many students who didn’t feel well. A few kids came in with the complaint of a stomachache. First we made sure they ate breakfast this morning and if they were having any diarrhea or vomiting. Then we checked their temperature and gave the students tums and a glass of water. For the students who had not eaten this morning we offered them pretzels or chips too munch on. Some of the students laid …show more content…
We went to different facilities in different areas such as Center City Philadelphia, South Philadelphia, West Philadelphia, and Bucks County. By going to the homeless shelter, senior center, and high school, I assessed different age groups and people of different socioeconomic classes.
#2 Apply the roles of the professional nurse to community setting This competency was met by educating about blood pressure at the homeless shelter and providing education on ways to reduce blood pressure in relation to what these people had access too. Since most homeless people do not have a doctor, we handed out slips of paper that had locations of free health clinics in walking distance. We also educated about exercise and cutting down on smoking. I took my professional nursing knowledge about high blood pressure and treatments and related it to the population I was …show more content…
I also taught about health food to eat to keep their sugars in check and the student stated well this is what my mom packs me for lunch.
#8 Assess a selected community and develop a plan to address health problems in the community This competency was met by pulling all the students charts that did not have all vaccinations complete and calling the family to make sure they get those vaccinations within 30 days or else the students would be asked to leave the school until vaccinations are complete. This betters the community because the more people that are vaccinated; the less like the illness is to spread in the
