They can be very powerful; especially if they get MPs, celebrities and a lot of media attention added to their campaign. The death penalty campaign is essentially a pressure group as they are campaigning for a new legislation to be made. Pressure groups threaten the government due to the fact that if the public doesn't agree on what they are bringing forwards then they risk their chances of being re-elected as a member of parliament. They can also get the medias attention by doing illegal stunts that give them a louder voice, although this can be seen as a bad thing as they can easily get the medias attention by using milder actions like forming protests in popular public places. Pressure groups can be very effective. If they are able to get an MP on their side then they'd get a seat in parliament which is a lot better than other small campaigns that cant do that as they don't have this support therefore not having as loud of a voice as the bigger campaigns that do making them a big influence. What makes them ineffective is when they are not an influence to parliament due to them not being a big campaign, this can cause problems as these smaller campaigns could need something that is important for their community. The royal commission exert influence on parliament by investigating laws that aren't valid or don't apply to current day situations. They are there to protect the public and their rights and they do this via selection. Once selected they work together on a specific area to draft a report to advise the government on what they should do before they are disbanded. So in relation to the death penalty campaign, the royal commission could either be a major set back or a helpful push depending on what they advise. This can make them effective as they won’t let anything go amiss merely due to the fact that they are a team of specialists that have a good understanding about what they are talking about unlike the parliament where they have been built to be political. It can also seen to be an effective method of getting the job done as there are new people appointed for each investigation so its not the same people each time working on things that they may or may not be knowledgeable on.
