Collaborative Group Work

Many individuals may think that working in groups is more beneficial to their thinking, but did you know that working in groups’ affects your nervous system in a more negative way? Group work is increasingly being used in various classrooms and work areas. Collaborative work is being used frequently as it helps build stronger communication skills, but in-group work there are more disadvantages than there are advantages. Although working in groups help build communication skills, working alone enables more concentration, productivity, and easier decision making. In order to complete a task at an efficient rate, concentration is needed. The ability to focus the mind is one of the most important abilities one should possess. However, most people lack the ability to concentration while working in groups. According to a new research by University of Calgary, Faculty of Kinesiology researcher Tim Welsh has stated that working in groups slows down students performance (Don McSwiney). It makes the work more appealing and efficient. Research on working in groups show that teamwork can actually inhibit or even damage productivity. One reason students are less productive in group works is because of a behavior called social loafing (Williams). It’s well known that individuals tend to make less effort when they don’t feel responsible for carrying the whole load (Herbert).
