In Susan Cain’s essay “The Rise of the New Groupthink” (published Jan 15, 2012), Cain puts the New Groupthink, the Plan of action that group work is more effective, on trial. Cain starts her essay by saying “Research strongly suggests that people are more creative when they enjoy privacy and freedom from interruption” (14), she then goes on to give various examples of times that has been proven this statement correct. Susan Cain points out how we have distanced ourselves from our main goal which is to have geniuses, putting people skills over creativity. Consequently, workers have lacked in creativity and productivity. She then goes on to tell us how Steve Woznick, the creator of apple, came up with the idea of a “user-friendly computer.”

I have experienced various things that Cain pointed out as a student. For example, when working in a group everyone tends to rely on one person to do most of the work, becoming more insecure about themselves. Cain stated “Studies show that open-plan offices make workers hostile, insecure and distracted” (16). I have also felt insecure about projecting my ideas when they are completely different from the majorities; we get in our own heads and start comparing ourselves to others lowering our confidence. Usually when I work with a lot of people I can’t concentrate, and I know of many that agree with me on this. I usually just tell myself that I’ll do the work once I am alone. She then says “Group performances gets worse as group size increases.” Similar to classes in college, I have heard various times from fellow classmates that they perform worse in bigger classrooms because less is expected from them individually during classes. I like Susan Cain also believe that people skills are essential to our lives; however, I believe having a strict rule on group brainstorming restrains introverts from creating something magnificent in their moments on isolation.
