For example, the South gave the North raw materials for them to turn into manufactured goods. Then the North in turn sent back some of the manufactured goods to the South, but also keeping some of the manufactured products to sell. Consequently, the South had to pay import taxes on their own goods. The South was had to not only give the North raw materials but then had to buy it for twice as much as they sold it to the North because of import taxes. This created a lot of conflict because the people of North were getting paid twice as much and were not paying any where near the amount of import tax as the South was, in fact the South paid for more than eighty-five percent of the railroads that were laid by the federal government. The South saw that the people up North were bathing in their own money, and the South were having to eat their own crops because they could not afford any of the manufactured goods that were coming from the North. This all goes back to the American Revolution, the whole reason we went to war with Britain is because they were imposing taxes without asking their colonies, making them pay for goods that would not be beneficial to the colonies.
