The South was heavily dependent on slave labor in their economy, and they saw this as the North putting them at a large disadvantage economically yet again. With the North seeking to ban it in the entire country, the South felt their economy would be destroyed, and thus South Carolina was the first to secede. Four other states followed quickly behind their example, and the Civil War began. A few things at this time still could have prevented a war, such as; the North allowing the South to go, drawing up compromises that allowed slavery to continue in the South but not in the North or any new states, and also peacefully negotiating with the South instead of using the Force Act. The Union decided that the only way the country was complete, was for all of the states to remain within the Union. There is no better reasoning for the country wanting to stay together than the speech, Abraham Lincoln, gave that was called the Gettysburg Address. The war was not a question of economics or politics, but it was a question of who we were as a nation, and setting a foundation on what we would stand for from there on out. Overall I believe that the Civil War was inevitable, there were too many economic and political issues that were not going to be solved debating. Although the war ripped the country apart at the time, I believe the Civil War made this country the great world power
