The Civil War was one of the most memorable and historical wars in America. The conflicting beliefs of the north and south lead to a war that consisted of at least 616,000 casualties. Originally, the war began in hopes to prevent the states of the south from leaving the Union of the U.S. States of the south seceded because of a difference of ideas regarding slavery. Some people believe that slavery was the primary cause of the Civil War, though slavery did play a major role in the upbringing of the civil war I do not believe that it was the dominant cause of the war. On March 4, 1850, in John C. Calhoun’s address to the U.S Senate, he states, “I have, Senators, believed from the first that the agitation of the subject of slavery would, if not prevented by some timely and effective measure, end in disunion.” (DBQ 7, Slavery and the Civil War,1846-1860, Document A)This shows that Congress was more concerned about disunion and that because slavery threatened the unity of the United States it became a contributing factor of the disunion of the south. …show more content…

The war at home became controversial because of the huge dive of supporters of the war and non-supporters of the war. The people opposed to the war tended to be middle class working people along with the working class women, and African Americans with grade school education and low paying jobs. The people opposed to war were making mostly moral arguments. They stated that the missions being conducted were forcing people to relocate just like the U.S. did to Native Americans in the mid to late 1800s…

Unity was key for America to pursue not only its moral aspirations, but for it to eventually emerge as an economic powerhouse and a world power. Even though the Confederates, especially those belonging to the Planter Class, believed that their economic wellbeing, and perhaps even…
