Child Development: Social And Cognitive Differences

How children think and talk about their physical and social environments can be quite variable, however there are certain social, cognitive, and linguistic abilities that studies have shown are indicative of a child's development in various areas. The world of a 2.5 year old is almost entirely different than the world of a 4 year old. In order to provide real world application to these differences, I will compare and contrast the interaction of 2.5 year old Augustus (Augie), and 4 year old Andres (Bunny). In video one, Augie is eating a bowl of pancakes, with his family members around him, at the breakfast table. Augie is really observant of his environment and talks about the things he perceives. During breakfast, his grandmother engages him in conversion about growing and then attempts to have Augie fully participate in the …show more content…
The second video depicts Bunny who is playing with his toy snake in a way that will "spook" other people. He is interacting with his mother and follows along as she engages him in conversation between the differences between boys and girls. Then he completes two conservation tasks, which test his cognitive development. During this interaction, Bunny makes clear comments, gestures, and uses his body language to show his boredom or interest in the task. In each video segment the children are completing two separate tasks, and although these may seem like completely unrelated scenarios, both provide a brief extract into the cognitive, linguistic, and social development of children at different ages.
