Garrett, the energetic four year old who I had previously observed, was somewhat quiet when observing him the second time. It was three in the afternoon and the teacher was finishing up circle time. Garrett was seated on the red rug in the middle of the first row and sat with his feet tucked under him and his knees bent. The classroom was fully decorated with Fall colors which consisted of numerous paintings and art projects plastered on the walls and hanging from the ceilings. There was also interactive Fall themed centers set up around the room for the students to explore. One was all about leaves and one had to do with the changing of seasons. There were a few college employees that came in and out of the classroom throughout the half hour …show more content…
The other kids slowly filled into the empty chairs around the rectangular table. The teacher instructed the students, “for this snack, boys and girls, you are allowed to pour your own milk.” All of a sudden, this made Garrett super antsy, and he wiggled around in his chair with a huge grin on his face exclaiming “this is going to be so cool!” Slow and steady, he poured his milk into the cereal without spilling. Another smile came across his face as he set the cup down. He proclaimed “I did it guys, and didn’t spill one drop!” The quiet Garrett who I had been observing the past ten minutes quickly turned into the energetic Garrett who I had observed the first time around. From that moment on, Garrett became more spunky and full of positive energy. He and a classmate shared dinosaur stories for about five minutes while eating cereal. Establishing connections with peers was very evident in Garrett when I was observing. He talked in a large group during circle time when asked a question, but he could also communicate one-on-one with another child. Being able to hold a conversation is part of the domain of social emotional development. For four year olds, a simple conversation lasting for just five minutes is a huge

Garrett Tallinger, a fourth grader, life is evolved around organized activities. The Tallinger’s are a family of the middle class, who seem to believe that organized activities shape their children’s life, and will create structure for their children as they grow up. In the home of the Tallinger’s, Garrett’s schedule dictates what the family will have planned for the day, they have very little time for extra- curricular activities. Which means, if Garrett’s siblings have something they need to attend to they more than likely won’t because Garrett has something going on that same day. The Tallinger’s rarely interact with their extended family because, of the busy life of Garrett.…

Grant and his other classmates from Cedarwood Middle were slouching with their heads down on the desks. They’ve kept this position until the raucous bell rang, which woke them up from their trance. As Grant walked down the noisy hallways, he observed many of the bulletin boards and posters hung up on the beige, spotted walls. These colorful pictures kept him motivated to work hard and persevere. He approached the crowded cafeteria, made up of round tables with bubble gum stuck to each one, rusty trash cans that make an annoying noise if they fall, and windows covered in random oil stains coming from the greasy food the lunch ladies cook.…

Usually after this was done, we would quietly walk in a single file line down the hallway to the playground. That day, however, it was different. When I opened my eyes, instead of an orderly line of kindergartners, there was one little boy chaotically jumping up and down. As red in the face as a tomato, he seemed to be getting antsier by the second. “Teacher!…

When I walk into Ms. Keller’s classroom, I feel like a giant. Everything is smaller from, the chairs to tables, and even the smartboard is lower. I forgot how small kindergartners really are. There are four tables in the middle of the room, and one next to the wall. The room is filled with color and posters about the ABC’s, counting, and pay attention during class.…

The setting of my 2nd focus child was a Little Bucs in the preschool room (Inventors) in the classroom, but we did visit the ETSU library during my first observation. I was able to see how my teacher prepared for parent-teacher conferences my last day observing at Rawsonville. She explained how important it is to have a nice jacket and a change of shoes. She said that putting on another pair of shoes can help with comfort and give an energy boost. Furthermore, she said that after talking all day it is important to brush your teeth and fix makeup as to refresh yourself and be presentable. My teacher never sits at the front of the table or behind her desk because she explained it can create a disconnect and make her seem like an authoritative figure.…

Much of what I am observing in Mrs. Logan’s class is repetitive, however, this last week after completing their math worksheets, she had the students work on addition, subtraction and amount vocabulary (larger, smaller, less, more, equal). To complete this task, she had one teacher using cards that showed the number and an equal number of shapes (card 5 would have 5 stars). She gave each student 2 cards and asked them to either add or subtract the two numbers. She then would ask the students who had the most or the least. This was fun to watch because they would get so excited when they could come up with the answer and “won” the question.…

Another thing that I observed were how transitions took place in the class. The class was a little rowdy at times, which made transitions a little hectic. To combat this problem, Mrs.Sorey came up with an incentive for the students. She would give them “Sorey Bucks” if well behaved during times of transition. If they were not well behaved, “Sorey Bucks” would be taken away.…

I really enjoyed the time I spent in Mrs. Flinn’s fourth grade classroom over Spring Break. I was able to observe for a total of four hours between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. During my time with the fourth graders, I took a closer look at the solid behavior classroom supports being used. Along with these supports, I was extremely impressed by the way Mrs. Flinn handled classroom management. Even though I observed during a very exciting week, she had great control over her students.…
