At one point, Sophie had to escape the bonobo enclosure and get inside the sanctuary before the kata-kata (dangerous war soldiers) caught up and captured her. The electric fence of the enclosure turned off, which meant the kata-kata could now get in. She barely managed to do it, but she ended up successfully escaping at the very last second. She did this by quickly closing the garage door and locking it. She was very shaken up about this, but I think it taught Sophie how to make smart decisions while under pressure.
Later on, Sophie had to make a very hard decision. She had to leave her group of bonobos at an abandoned village (except for Otto). She was torn between survival, and her… almost new family. The group had taken Otto after he got caught in a trap. They were being horrible to him, burning him with the end of cigarette buds, forcing him to drink beer until the point he couldn’t walk, and much more. She had to do something about it, but she didn’t know how to save him. But, if she didn’t act fast then Otto might not survive. So, Sophie went with her gut and made a dash for the house, in hopes to save Otto. There were some challenges and roadblocks, but she managed to execute her plan. This experience taught Sophie that sometimes you need to make risky decisions, even if they are out of your comfort
