We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves Rosemary Analysis

Family Matters Most How important is family? In Karen Joy Fowler’s We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves Rosemary, the main character, finds out just how important family is. With a missing brother who is also wanted by the FBI and a sister who was taken away from her at a young age readers understand that Rosemary’s childhood has been anything but ordinary. Which is why Fowler starts the story in the middle rather than the beginning (Fowler 2). Readers don’t discover that Rosemary’s sister, Fern, is actually a chimpanzee until Fowler already establishes human-like qualities in her. Fowler keeps her identity a secret, because she wants the readers to look at how close the Rosemary and Fern truly were. In Rosemary’s eyes Fern is human and later compares their relationship as the equivalent of twins. Rosemary’s father participating in an experiment involving chimps being raised in a human setting caused fern’s arrival. The same university that gave Fern to her very loving family was the same university that took her away due to lack of funding and lack of results (Fowler 269). Her father was a psychologist at a local university that was the reason Fern entered their lives. Before and during Fern’s ride with the family Rosemary’s father was a “young professor on the rise,” but at the end his five-year research with Fern “he was certain that his colleagues disrespected him” (Fowler 110). Rosemary mainly blamed her father for the departure of Fern because how he just let them take her away. Later on in the story Rosemary’s father passes away and the next few passages that Fowler wrote about were Rosemary wishing to get closure with her father.
