Cause Of Ocean Pollution

There must be a major push for us to do something about the plastic that pollutes our oceans. As of 2014, there was 311 million tons of plastic in the oceans. With so much plastic, the ratio of fish and plastic was just 5 to1. We cannot allow the amount of plastic in our oceans to rise. Still, though, there is expected to be as much as 1,124 million tons of plastic in our oceans by 2050, making the ratio nearly 1 to 1. That sort of mistreatment to the planet is unacceptable. The wildlife, health of humans, and the health of our planet are all in danger as these numbers continue to rise. In the North Pacific Ocean, there is a large mass of garbage about the size of Australia. Here, 750,000 micro plastic pieces can be found per square kilometer. The marine life is absolutely riddled with plastics an other garbage. All the garbage is moved to this specific spot called the “The Great Pacific Garbage Patch” by ocean currents that create a vortex that makes it virtually impossible for trash to ride the currents out of …show more content…
Humans have also been greatly impacted by the major increase in pollution. The island of Tuvalu in Oceania was once a gorgeous island full of color and life; a great tourist spot. In recent years, though, the island has become altered with garbage, plastic being amongst the most predominately found pieces of trash. With such a large mass of garbage, the beauty is masked and ruined, becoming a landfill. "People were just throwing plastic outside," says Jo Ruxton, director of the movie A Plastic Ocean. "They were drowning in the stuff, and trying to burn it.
