Before the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 the U.S. had no liability on oil spills. The problem was still reoccurring even though over 10,000 oil spills were occurring every year around the country. It wasn’t until the major Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska that it was shown that there was no protocol or organization to immediately and effectively clean up the large spill. In the Conference report for the Oil Pollution Act of 1990, it is stated that there was a great increase on the liability of oil spillers, in which tankers will be liable for “$1200 per gross ton, and facilities will be liable for as much as $350 million.”…

Since the 1800s, natural resources have been collected from oceans by using offshore drills (Offshore). While this new innovation created jobs and bolstered coastal economies, it also produced a new, looming threat to marine wildlife and coastal economies. In 1967, the first major oil spill occurred off of the coast of the Isles of Scilly, when 38 million gallons of oil were spilled into surrounding waters. Including this incident, 36 major spills have occurred since 1967, exposing marine environments to at least one trillion gallons of oil (Oil). Now, it is being debated about whether or not to drill for natural resources off of the Southeastern Coast.…

For 87 days oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico leaving an environmental catastrophe and disrupting numerous industries. It is estimated 210 million gallons of oil spilled into the gulf for approximately 68,000 square miles; the environmental effects can still be felt by wildlife and locals in the area. During the ensuing investigation it was discovered that BP neglected safety precautions and in April 2012 senior officers and an engineer were charged with obstruction of justice for deleting text messages and making false statements about the rate oil was spilling into the gulf. Internal emails showed that BP estimated “the runaway well could be leaking from 62,000 barrels a day to 146,000 barrels a day.”…

Dear Congressman, After researching the production of oil, in regards to offshore drilling I have found that the oil rigs are creating a vast amount of negative externalities, which is leading to inefficiencies in the economy. Offshore drilling is greatly associated with the amount of risk and as technology advances it has allowed companies to operate in even deeper waters, which allows the major companies to explore further out into the ocean. Past oil spills, along with the assumption of future oil spills, it is hard to measure the damage it has created on the environment and the global economy.
