The Rhetoric Of The Surfrider Foundation

When someone throws a plastic wrapper out the car window, or down the sewer drain, does it ever occur to them where that trash goes? According to litteritcostsyou.org, 1.9 billion tons of litter ends up in the ocean each year. Plastic is polluting Earth at a disturbing rate; humans are essentially killing themselves and killing everything else that surrounds them off this planet due to prolonged littering. What most people don’t know, is that litter such as plastic bags and cigarette butts, do not dissolve or disintegrate, or at least within a human’s lifetime. Marine life and other animals that live near bodies of water consume the trash humans carelessly dispose, which kills them due to choking and other hazardous effects from trash consumption. Earth’s soup of trash, also known as the ocean, is in a sense, suffocating in plastic litter, forming literal islands of trash. Compelling rhetoric is created frequently to delineate the horrors of plastic and trash pollution within Earth’s oceans such as ‘The Surfrider Foundation’. The foundation casted a campaign in July 2010, with a …show more content…
The Surfrider Foundation creatively exemplifies what human pollution and carelessness is resulting in such as creating compelling ads like “Fossil, Bag”. Trash islands, which is a result from human pollution, clutters the oceans as well as contaminates marine biology with plastic and plastic components. Unfortunately, humans will continue to contribute to the trash islands and the marine life epidemic by throwing their plastic products out the window and onto the ground as they live their irresponsible lives. The vicious cycle of human carelessness is resulting into the consumption of their very own trash: plastic bags and plastic products. The more that plastic is produced and dumped into the ocean, the more prevalent plastic really is within human daily life, as well as inside

According to the article “How we Ruined the Oceans,” by the Week, the human race is destroying the world’s oceans by the overproduction of plastics and overfishing, and the the only way to counteract the effects is to join together and try to fix the underlying problem that affects every living thing on the Earth. Humans are overfishing the oceans, which causes a significant imbalance in the food chain. The oceans are progressively getting more polluted, and it is at the point where it is virtually impossible to remove all the plastic harming oceanic ecosystems. Although some scientists say it's not too late to reverse the effects, as long as climate change is acted upon with great urgency.…

Marine debris can degrade marine habitats, endanger marine and coastal wildlife and pose threats to human health and safely. Scientists and explorers believe that the best way to accrue the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is to limit or eliminate the use of disposable plastics and increase the use of biodegradable resources in human’s everyday life. Since the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is so far from any country’s coastline, no nation takes the responsibility or provides the funding to clean it up.…

Have you ever been swimming in an ocean, and you notice a plastic bag or bottle floating in the water? There are many ways people can pollute the oceans. For starters, oil tankers spill oil into the water (Doc 2.). Boats sink (Doc 2), and eventually the boats break up into pieces and spread across the ocean floor (OI). Next, people dump sewage and garbage from boats and on beaches (Doc 2).…

Often this includes killing plant life and posing dangers to local animals.” This shows that plastic ain’t only hurting the oceans this is hurting the land and other types of animals that live in land. For plastic to get into the ocean it doesn’t only have to be from leaving trash on the beach. Even if you throw away your trash at the beach but you still litter on the streets, plastic could get into the ocean from heavy rain, flash floods, because the water could pick up the trash and when it goes down the water drains all that trash goes into the ocean. People don’t understand how much damage just one little piece of plastic would do to the ocean and the marine…

Marcus Eriksen and his colleagues explain in a 2014 article Plastic Pollution in the World 's Oceans, that there is an estimate of 5.25 trillion plastic particles weighing about 269,000 tons are floating in the world 's oceans. Also, according to Renee Cho in the 2011 article Our Oceans: A Plastic Soup, Cho states that an average amount of time for a plastic water bottle to decompose is around 450 years . Those fishes and other marine animals will be around the plastic waste for years before it decays or when someone removes it from the ocean. Surfrider and Rise above Plastic states that they strive for the best so that each and every sea creature can have a safe environment to live in and the way for that to be accomplished are to have decreased the amount of plastic in the…

Plastic bags make it so much easier to carry our groceries as compared to paper bags. Plastic wrappers do not stick to the food product and can be disposed of without taking up much. Utensils made of plastics make cleaning up easier, because they can just be thrown away. All of these luxuries have come from the invention of using plastics to make disposables, but such disposable items are not disposable in the sense that they are hard to break down. Thus, the “luxuries” actually made me realize the dangers of overusing plastics, leading me to look into the environment and how humans are harming the environment outside of plastic…

I believe we should have more organizations to help deal with this problem. This is a growing problem with the ocean’s becoming full of discarded trash. It is estimated that there is about 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic and other pieces of trash floating around the top of the ocean. Researchers estimated that about ten percent of garbage goes into the ocean every year. This is a major problem that needs to be controlled somehow.…

What people can do though is stop the excessive use of plastic and dispose of it in a better way. This documentary has moments when it seems as though it is just trying to shove facts in your face. As they are giving you facts and numbers one after one, it makes it hard to argue against what they are saying and disagree that the oceans have become riddled with plastic at a rapid pace. In the film, director Angela Sun states that the amount of plastic in the oceans has gone from 20 million lbs.…

We are using enormous amount of plastic daily. In fact, we feel that plastic is surrounding us. It becomes indispensable for us (Madren 1). Because it is durable and indestructible and has a low density, it starts to accumulate in huge amounts in our oceans, and moves for hundreds of miles away from the original site of pollution and concentrates in five known ocean gyres (Sun). The situation is really very serious now, because thousands of tons of plastics are polluting our oceans and environment, endangering the whole marine life and ecosystems as well as our own heath Plastics exert its harmful and toxic effect on the marine wildlife as a result of ingesting the plastics, also from leaching of plastic toxins, and from getting entangled in…

The way we neglect our ocean with heavy amounts of pollution can potentially affect our lives in a negative manner. Driving cars and the use of plastic is essential to our daily lives, but we use them without the concern for how they are affecting the habitats on Earth. Some people think that the chance that they are doing harm to the ocean is less important to them than cost or inconvenience of fixing a pollution problem. Through sources from researchers and scientists, they have found evidence of pollution caused by the two essential commodities in our lives, plastic and burning fossil fuels. Environmentalists have found solutions to reduce the plastic waste in our ocean as well as attempting to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere…

It is well know that there is an ongoing plastic debris epidemic with an estimated 8 billion tonnes of plastic waste being dumped into the ocean each year (Walter, 2015). With the increasing growth of the human population and the ever expanding affluence of lower income countries plastic waste is only going to increase. Marine ecosystems will be the brunt of this crisis with most terrestrial plastic waste ending its journey in the oceans. The most fragile ecosystems, coral reefs, will be the first to deteriorate from the ongoing epidemic unless changes are made. 50-*0% of all life on the planet live in the oceans (UNESCO, 2015)…

Plastic Overtaking the Oceans In a study conducted by UC Santa Barbara’s National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS), they found that “8 million metric tons of plastic” are added to the oceans pollution each year. Recently, plastic pollution has been become a predominant problem in the environmental society; however plastic production and pollution has been on the rise since the nineties. Plastic is overwhelming the world, because it is not biodegradable, meaning it can never be decomposed; therefore plastic will not simply disappear, either animals will digest it, humans will clean it up, or plastic will continue to accumulate in the ocean’s garbage patches. Since plastic is all over the world and the amount is continuing…
