The Negative Effects Of Ocean Pollution

The ocean covers more than 70% our earth’s surface, and 97% of the water found on the earth is contained in the ocean. Ocean pollution is a serious matter that people can get into a discussion, but when they go to bed at night not a lot of people are thinking about how much ocean pollution affects not only endangered species that live in the ocean but us as well. Most people don’t believe that they contribute to ocean pollution. They think it’s the big industries that create plastic and aluminum products, but 80% of the pollution in the water are from nonpoint source pollution as a result of runoff. Even if industries start to create products that won’t harm the earth the way they do now. There’s still going to be small things like when a …show more content…
His idea, create a long V-shaped floating barrier to collect trash in the waters using the ocean currents to help move the trash into the middle of the V where a solar operated conveyer belt will scoop up the trash and put it into a recycling station. Slat isn’t the only one that’s trying to do something about the pollution in the ocean though. “A floating village called Seawer is an out-there concept that would strain trash from the ocean using a lineup of different-sized filters. Seawer could catch and store big junk, such as refrigerators and tin cans, as well as small plastic particles. To support human inhabitants living topside, the system would produce hydroelectric power and purify seawater for drinking and irrigation.” (“Cleaning the Ocean” 23) Keeping the ocean clean doesn’t necessarily mean going to the middle of the ocean with this big machine and sucking up all the trash. Baltimore’s Mr. Trash wheel, another source that’s trying to solve the ocean pollution problem, starts off by cleaning the water the exits it habor before it goes into the ocean. Last year alone, Mr Trash wheel collected 118,670 plastic bottles and 2.6 million cigarette butts totaling to at least 213 tons of trash. If every state put small fine grates in the storm drains, or put mesh in any possible place where the storm drains/pipes lead to the ocean there would be less trash in the ocean. Make it part of communities survive to pick up the trash that washes into the

Have you ever been swimming in an ocean, and you notice a plastic bag or bottle floating in the water? There are many ways people can pollute the oceans. For starters, oil tankers spill oil into the water (Doc 2.). Boats sink (Doc 2), and eventually the boats break up into pieces and spread across the ocean floor (OI). Next, people dump sewage and garbage from boats and on beaches (Doc 2).…

Marine debris can degrade marine habitats, endanger marine and coastal wildlife and pose threats to human health and safely. Scientists and explorers believe that the best way to accrue the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is to limit or eliminate the use of disposable plastics and increase the use of biodegradable resources in human’s everyday life. Since the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is so far from any country’s coastline, no nation takes the responsibility or provides the funding to clean it up.…

Soon, it will begin piling and piling up, until you are forced to move out of your home, or end up dying in the rubbish. Most of us have been to either a lake or a beach. You remember seeing the waves crashing onto the shore, little kids screaming and making sand castles, and smelling the salty ocean air.…

Laws are being made to try to prevent pollution from land, sea, and air to protect endangered species, and to try to build marine protected areas. Pollution has been harming organisms all over the world and will continue to harm these species without the effort to help stop polluting the oceans. Oceans absorb 80% of greenhouse gases and 50% of the carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. Over the past 50 years, as carbon dioxide emissions have increased, the ocean's temperature has steadily risen. Natural disasters are also affecting the oceans.…

The way we neglect our ocean with heavy amounts of pollution can potentially affect our lives in a negative manner. Driving cars and the use of plastic is essential to our daily lives, but we use them without the concern for how they are affecting the habitats on Earth. Some people think that the chance that they are doing harm to the ocean is less important to them than cost or inconvenience of fixing a pollution problem. Through sources from researchers and scientists, they have found evidence of pollution caused by the two essential commodities in our lives, plastic and burning fossil fuels. Environmentalists have found solutions to reduce the plastic waste in our ocean as well as attempting to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere…

My solution for ocean pollution is to create laws about the types of trash that can be thrown into the ocean. Also, I will put trash cans and recycling cans along beaches, so that people will not feel tempted to throw the trash into the ocean. This solution would work because I would hire groups of people that try to get others to donate money to the ocean being polluted by trash.. Then, once enough money was collected to put trash cans along the beach, I would create organizations that are in charge of putting the trash cans along the beach. To create the laws about the types of trash that can be thrown into the ocean, I would organize groups of people who would then go around and try to get donations.…

Ocean acidification is a big problem that not many know about. And the very sad part about that is that we are the ones causes it and if maybe we knew the total extend of what we are doing to our planet and oceans then maybe we would change our ways. The burning of coal at huge factory’s and burning of fossil fuels are only just some of the many factors that continue to contribute to harming our oceans waters and all the creatures living in it. Huge carbon dioxide clouds end up drifting around and end up at sea and about 40 percent of the entire carbon dioxide end up getting dissolved in the ocean which makes about 96 percent of our planet.…

Artificial fertilizers pour through our streams into the ocean every day. Storm drains and their underground channels collect the toxic waste from our sidewalks, streets and highways and take that toxic cocktail to mix in the ocean. Even in more “developed” countries like the United States and even in areas such as southern California there are incidents where sewage treatment plants malfunction and human waste is discharged into the ocean. Manufacturing processes and the waste from lights, computers and thousands of other modern inventions, result in the contamination of our oceans. Ever increasing levels of mercury in the oceans’ waters is well known, but there are others as well.…
