Preparing A Carbohydrate For A Dog

Improved Essays
If your dog has had surgery, he may need to be on a post-surgery bland diet during his recovery. He will have special nutritional needs, as well as plenty of rest so that his body can recover completely. You love your dog, who is most likely more a part of the family than a pet. As a matter of fact, he probably thinks he is human.

Liquid Diet
If your dog has had anesthesia, you may want to put him on a liquid diet for 6 hours after surgery, and might want to consider adding some electrolytes, as he will probably be dehydrated because of not being able to eat before surgery and the anesthesia. If he does well the first 6 hours, keep him on the liquids for 6 more hours before you begin the post-surgery diet.

You will need to cut up the food into small bites so that it will be easier for your dog to digest. Give small amounts several times a day, so that the digestive system has time to adjust. Feeding him too much at a time will most likely cause him to vomit.
Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are a very important source for helping your dog’s body with healing, especially after surgery affecting his muscles and tissues. It is also good for strengthening his stomach after an illness.

Remember to feed only small amounts about every two hours, feeding only a couple of teaspoons of food at each meal. As your dog is healing, you can gradually increase the amount of food offered at each feeding. Make sure that you watch your dog closely. His behavior will give you important clues as to how he is feeling. If he shows distress or vomiting after a meal, decrease the amount of food you offer. If, however, the vomiting continues you need to seek advice from your vet, who may want to see your dog for a checkup, just to ensure that everything is okay.
When your dog is ready to start back on a regular diet, do not start feeding normally all at once. You will need to gradually introduce his regular diet by adding small amounts to the post- surgery diet he has been eating. Gradually increase the amounts of regular dog food, and as you see that he is tolerating the change well, you will soon have him back on his regular eating regime.
Conclusion
Cooking the bland diet for your dog will require more time on your part, but it will be worth it for the health of your dog. There are some alternative pre-made dog foods that you can purchase for your dog if you choose to do so. Make sure you check with your vet concerning any changes you want to make in your dog’s diet because of surgery. You need to ensure that everything you plan is in your pet’s best interest, so always
