Laparoscopic gastric band surgery is done to help you lose weight. A band is put around the upper part of your stomach. This makes a small pouch which can hold only a small amount of food. The lower, bigger part of your stomach is below the band. The two parts stay connected by a small opening between the upper and the lower parts. Food goes through the opening to the lower part of your stomach more slowly than before the surgery. You will feel full with smaller amounts of food.

You will be given one or more of the following:
A medicine that makes you relaxed (sedative).
A medicine that makes you fall asleep (general anesthetic).
Small cuts (incisions) will be made in your belly.
Surgical tools will be inserted into these cuts. These tools will be used to put the band around the upper part of your stomach.
A tube (port) will be put under the skin of your belly. This tube is connected to the band on your stomach.
Your surgeon will then close the cuts and put a bandage over them.
On the inner lining of the band around your stomach is a balloon. The balloon is empty during the procedure. At a later visit, the balloon is filled with fluid. Your doctor puts the fluid in through the tube that is under the skin of your belly. This balloon adjusts how much food you are able to eat.

You may be given medicine to help with any pain you have.
