Arthroscopic knee surgery is the most common orthopedic procedure done in the United States so far. Arthroscopy is considered to be a surgical procedure done by an orthopedic doctor /surgeon, which they examine the internal structure of a joint and all of its’ components. It is considered to be a minimally invasive surgery, not causing much bleeding, and normally done within an outpatient setting (doctor’s office, surgical center). The method of arthroscopy involves using and inserting the arthroscope, a small tube that involves make up of lenses and optical fibers, through very small incisions in the flesh for the joint to be examined. There are usually only three small incisions that are done in the process. The arthroscope instrument is secured to a video camera and the interior of the joint is watched on a projecting monitor. There are different sizes of the arthroscopes depending on what the size of the joint which is being examined. For example, the knee is examined with an arthroscope that is approximately 5 millimeters in diameter. They bandages and gauze may be filled with drainage from the wound, as long as it looks normal it’s fine. The medical assistant will set up a pain management schedule for you, usually consisting of tylenol and advil, if you are allergic to any other pain medicines. This will reduce the pain, swelling, and redness. You will also want to ice your knee under and over it for 20 minutes on 40 minutes off and repeat. The medical assistant will also help you find a physical therapist to help gain mobility back within your knee, as this healing process can take up to a year to fully recover. Make sure to do the exercises that the doctor goes over as it is important as well to your recovery. The medical assistant will help you schedule appointments to have the medical assistant or surgeon to check on your healing of your wounds and joint a week or so out from surgery, and a few more times after
