Q: What is it?
A: To start off with, Amelia (from Greek ἀ- "lack of" plus μέλος (plural: μέλεα or μέλη) "limb") is the birth defect of missing a limb or more. It can also be a form of some sort of shrunken limb. There are other names for this disease if there are one, two, three, or more limbs missing. For an example tetra-Amelia is the missing of all four limbs.
Q: What could the cause of this be?
A: The absence of an arm or leg in Amelia happens as a result of the limb formation being either prevented or interrupted very early when developing inside of the mother. Which is between 24 and 36 days after fertilization. As for missing multiple limbs in Amelia, this is caused mainly through inheritance. If the parents of the unborn child have a messed up gene in their system but doesn’t show that on the outside of their body, then it can transfer over the child and therefore it can show up in the earlier stages of pregnancies. Another reason that Amelia could show up is if the mother has an infection, failed abortion or compilations associated with removing of an IUD after pregnancy, or the use of Thalidomide.
Q: Is there anyway to prevent this from happening?
A: This depends on many different things if the unborn baby has a mother with the gene mishap then it’s kind of, have the baby and find out if there is anything wrong with it. Now, if the baby was a failed abortion then there isn’t anyway of preventing that either. If it were the case with the infection the only hope would be to pray the infection heals before it transfers to the baby.
