Why Do Kids Have To Do Homework Essay

Improved Essays
Elementary school kids should not be responsible for having to do homework because it could lead to many problems within the child themselves or even their family. Kids in elementary school are in school for about six hours. If homework is another two to three hours, that’s almost nine hours of school work for them. They are young and full of energy and should be able to let that energy out when they get home after a long day of school and not have to be focused on their homework. Parents have not been in school for quite some time. Every child is going to ask their mommies and daddies for help on math problems, etc. If the parents cannot provide help, this puts stress on them and the child cannot finish their homework. Another problem is …show more content…
Most kids have sports practices or other types of extracurricular activities to do after school. If kids have practice on a night they have homework, it will be difficult for them to make time to do it or be focused on it. Maintaining good health is important for young people and they have to be involved in physical activities so they do not become over weight. After they get home from practice, it is time to take a bath and get ready for bed so they will be able to get up for another day of school in the morning. This leaves a child no time to do homework unless they stay up late to make sure they finish but, then they will just be tired for school they next day and might do poorly in the classroom. Not only is it tough on the families and the children to do their homework after school, but the teachers can become stressed as well. It takes a special person to be an elementary school teacher. If a teacher is required to give out homework, that is more work for them to grade. Most teachers grade papers at home, so all of this homework they have to grade could cause them to have less time with their families at home and less free time to enjoy their night after a long day at work. It will also give teachers less time to become prepared for the next lesson he/she will be teaching in

In an seven or eight hour school day one would hope an extensive amount of lessons would be accomplished. Homework stresses kids out because after spending one third of their day in a school building, they are greeted home with more work to do. A psychology professor, Harris Cooper, from Duke University conducted a study on how much homework should be given to a student each night. “"The bottom line really is all kids should be doing homework, but the amount and type should vary according to their developmental level and home circumstances.”(duke.edu). Cooper says this to prove the point that yes, homework can be given so that students can comprehend the lessons they are taught and gain knowledge. It should not however become an overwhelming activity that makes students obsess…

My first reason about why I don’t think that kids should receive homework is because it causes health problems. According to article #2, “giving too much homework to kids can cause stress, and too much stress can cause illness.” Kids can get sick from too much homework! Article #2 also states, “High school students and middle school students are up all night doing homework.” Kids with a lot of homework are not able to sleep at night. Furthermore, According to Webmd, sleep loss can cause car accidents, it can…

Homework doesn’t help students enjoy their high school experience, so it should not be given in high school. In high school, students have the same class schedule every day, in which they spend about one hour of instruction on each subject every day. Teachers and students should try to focus on in-class learning, not depending on homework. If they focus on learning, they don’t have to do more work at home. Homework can be time-consuming. Instead of taking time on homework,…

I think that being a student myself and understanding the struggles of having to do homework on a daily basis is really what intrigued me in this article. Having free time for my is very difficult because I am either drowning in homework, at a sports practice, or working. Homework has definitely kept me up at nights, which would later cause me to be exhausted during the school day. However I do feel that Darter’s article is weak in terms that she could definitely use more evidence to convey her expression of the no homework policy. Our current school day is based on a schedule that kids must get up at a certain time and switch classes based by a ring of a bell. If kids didn’t have to worry about getting certain assignments done for the next day, I do agree with Darter that, kids would have more time to be kids. In her article Darter refers to a study done at Duke University. The study showed that “all it does is negatively impact kids’ attitudes towards school, learning, and their parents(the homework enforcers).” This research shows, not proves, that homework does have an effect on studies ability to do well in…

First of all, homework causes stress on students. We may as well just spend all day at school if we are having school at home anyways. Students should go to school, work on “school” work, then come home and not do “school” work at home. This would increase the productivity and attitudes of students. I, for one, would be in a much better mood concerning school if I knew that I didn’t have to look forward to coming home to more school work. Coming home to school work is a great way to ruin someone's week. Every day, knowing that you will be working on boring math, or writing a wonderful paragraph.…

One reason I think that schools should have homework is that kids need to have academic success. Children need to do homework if they want to succeed in an increasingly competitive academic learning culture. According to today.duke.edu in 2006 they asked parents on how they think about the amount of homework that their children get. 58% of…

Schools should not allow students to do school work after school or at home. It just stresses them out more and we already have around eight hours of school. I think that is enough. Homework just makes them not want to go to school anymore or enjoy it. Studies have shown that students learn more at school, where there are not a lot of distractions, than at home, where there are a lot of distractions.…

All schools in the United States must have a school day that is six hours or less. This gives children an opportunity to gain an education for their future, but also allows them to enjoy their hobbies and passions outside of school. There's also an more gracious amount of time after school for children to complete the homework that is assigned to them so they don’t stress over their assignments as much. This lets children enjoy their childhood carefree before entering the stressful life of an adult. Now they can enter adulthood with more enthusiasm, rather than being tired and stressed before becoming of age.…

Homework just gets rid of free time that you have to do fun stuff. If kids in didn’t have homework, there would be more time for playing and family time. I personally think that we should do all work in class. When we do work in class, we can actually get help from the teacher and not have to worry about getting a bad grade. Some families won’t let kids have free time if they get bad grades, so this can resolve in better grades and more fun for kids. Also, families…

The first reason why schools should get rid of homework is because most kids have after school activities like instruments or sports. In Schoolastic.com Deane Hymel said that his daughter is getting too much homework and that since she joined the band, it's hard to get homework done because she has to practice her instrument every night for 30 minutes. Although you may be saying It's only 30 minutes, just think about the kids who have multiple instruments or multiple sports In…

Homework can be a tedious task and to fill a whole night with it can be overwhelming. With students that do extra carricular activities it can make it even harder. Some students and teachers believe that homework is not necessary that just the claswork is enough. Sometimes that can be the case but I belive that the perfectly balanced amount of homework and classwork is perfect. Considering this, classwork is just as important to have a managable amount. A students day does not need to be filled with 8 hours of classwork with an additional two or three at home, Students need free space. On that same idea, students need to have a normal life that does not include all of this work. It can feel like they have nothing but homework and classwork to do which can be dangerous if they are too stressed and do not know what to do or where to start working.…

Students have said that homework causes them to sleep less, have headaches and lead to stomach problems (Strauss 2). At such a young age, children and teens should not have to battle these terrible symptoms in their life. Sometimes the students have no idea how to do their homework, no matter how much they try and study their notes from class. Which results in them staying up late at night until the morning. Staying up to do homework is an unhealthy habit (Giles 1). Once a student has reached the early hours of the morning, they might not even be doing the homework correctly. Homework could potentially causes mental health problems and cause stress (Luke 1). Parents would not want that for their children even if it is to maintain their grades. According to Luke “14 percent of parents say [homework] is more than 10 hours” (Luke 1). It should not take that long for homework to be finished because students still have many other things to do besides homework. Even if they do not have something of import to do, they can just go out or do something fun which serves as a break from all the schoolwork they are assigned. Parents would much rather have their students enjoying their time after school…

56% of people say that homework should be abolished while 44% say it shouldn 't be (Suhay). Majority parents want their child to have a free lifestyle with an education. Abolishing homework would not only make the students happy, but the parents because they expect their children to be doing well while being able to hang out with their family and friends. Homework from elementary to middle school has increased an hour more and has students staying up late. Parents noticed that their children have been bringing in about 2 or 3 hours. Family time has been cut out of their life just to keep up with their work. It’s hard for children to see their parents if they have tons of homework and the parent has to work a lot. Homework should be given as optional if the students want to help their grade. Understanding the homework would be easier if it was just classwork because the teacher would be able to help guide through it. Some may argue that homework is a good thing because it helps with…
