What’s factors played significant that can a role to individual verses a group or family treatment pertain to substance abuse? When discovering the debate with SAMHSA and the Advocacy group it brought awareness and insight of the separate services both entities offered. The National Advisory Council implement a resolution endorsing that the SAMHSA inspire a wide range of supporting services to make a dual diagnosis. Being identified as joint entities can offer a more effective treatment to the populace at once.…
The counselor’s interactions need to be intentional, focused and problem-oriented. The role of the counselor is that of a facilitator and guide. The counselor facilitates the client’s exploration into core beliefs, cognitive process and/or distortions and behavioral patterns. The counselor then guides the client in framing the conclusions they draw from this exploration into a hypothesis that can be tested and measured through goal establishment and goal follow through. At certain points in the process of CBT, the counselor’s role is that of a teacher (Freeman et al.,…
Describe the dynamics of the clients in the video series using your understanding of systems theory and specifically from the perspective of solution focused counseling. Be sure to identify aspects of each of the five video counseling sessions From what I have seen, these videos showcase four vastly different family dynamics. It appears that all the clients are mandated to come into services.…
Solution-Focused brief therapy (SFBT) would be an effective theory to use as a school counselor because it can be used in a short amount of time, focuses on the positive, uses strengths that students already possess, and focuses on finding solutions and coming up with goals to solve students’ problems (Henderson & Thompson, 2011). School counselors are often faced with many tasks to complete, thus, using a counseling theory that is successful in a short amount of counseling sessions would be beneficial for school counselors as well as students. In addition, because of the goal oriented approach and focusing on the students’ strengths, counselors can help students move towards goals in a positive way (Henderson & Thompson, 2011). For me personally,…
The Recovery Model: I can see how the recovery model would work with Solution Focused Brief Therapy. “The recovery model aims to help people with mental health problems to look beyond mere survival and existence. It encourages them to move forward, set new goals and do things and develop relationships that give their lives meaning”. ("Mental Health foundation," SFBT is an approach that focuses on how clients change, rather than one which focuses on diagnosing and treating problems. For Tonya, she is recovering from a substance addiction, child and adult abuse, AIDS, and has addiction to sex, and mental health problems.…
A counselor must be a friendly person who has empathy for not only the people in crisis but for the problems that caused the crisis for the client. They must be able to distance themselves from the crisis and the client to objectively see the problem and figure out the solution or solutions using all the information given, while still making sure the client is capable of functioning and upholding their part of the treatment. They must be able to remain ethical during the treatment. Having the ability to feel empathy but not overstep and allow them to become personally involved with the…
In the SFBT model, the therapist need start the relationship in a place of “not-knowing” by placing to the side their judgments. According to Corey & Corey (2010), jointly the counselor and group members create goals that will guide the course of…
As a counselor, I would like to learn to involve them, make use of their experiences, strength, and…
Solution-focused brief therapy focuses on what individual group members would like to accomplish. It also focuses on the solutions, as oppose to talking about the problem. Solution-focused brief therapy is also meant to be short-term, as well simplified. The rationale for Solution-focused brief therapy, is that it is brief. Solution-focused brief therapy looks for exceptions, in that it looks for what has work and what does work as far as solutions in our lives.…
Overall, counselors must understand their clients, be able to communicate effectively, and consider multiple context of cultural aspects in order to effectively help…
CBT places importance on educating the client about understanding the approach and the theories behind it (Butler et al., 2006). Though it is designed to be a short-term approach, sessions should be a meaningful exchange between the therapist and the client, and clear goals should be identified (Corey, 2012). Goal setting should be a collaborative effort, creating a sense of teamwork and allowing the client to feel motivated to understand its purpose. When the therapist is unsure of how to progress the session, or changes direction without consulting the client, sessions can become ineffective, as clients may feel transparent. Sessions should end with the therapist addressing unanswered questions and providing feedback on the client’s progress, so a sense of closure and comfort is created.…
This goal oriented therapy is about problem solving and obtaining a solution. Its main focus is learning about the patient’s strengths and focusing on the root of the problem and helping patients find tools that they can immediately use to help manage their problem. “It is grounded on the optimistic assumption that people are resourceful and competent and have the ability to construct solutions that can change the direction of their lives.” (Corey, 2012 p 425). It is highly encouraged with SFBT by practitioners for the patient to identify their goals, imagine a future they might envision and then work towards achieving those…
-Her ideal self is a good person and she feels she is not -She doesn’t accurately view organismic experience of making a decision because she feels she is not good enough -She feels immature because she needs reassurance. She does not accurately symbolize getting help because she feels she should be more mature and do this on her own. 2. Empathetic listening: This is when the counselor sense and address what the clients are feeling…
What I learned in this course In this course, I completed reading the text Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy written by Gerald Corey, which helped me have a better understanding of different types of theories and how they can benefit or help potential clients I may have. From all the theories studied in this course, there are some theories that I would like to apply that would be beneficial in helping me guide my clients to the right path. Person-centered therapy: In this therapy, Carl Roger recommended that the client would have the best help if the therapist motivates the client to concentrate on the problem then on the interpretation that others have on the situation.…
While managing to present the client with certain challenges that allow them to see the action that needs to be taken, and what can they do in order to bring about change. It is also very necessary to help the clients pinpoint their own personal strengths, understand what’s hindering them from using available resources, and to have them specifically state what they want they want in life and how they want to live it. Professional boundaries/roles on the therapist behalf is to be explicitly stated before the therapy is in session. Maybe also a little clarification of the rules of therapy and what therapy is exactly since individuals tend to have misconstrued information about therapy in general. Some important characteristics that a good counselor should have is the willingness to listen, to provide encouragement, to be empathetic, to be nonjudgmental, to have patience, and to most of all uphold the promise to keep things confidential unless that client is at risk for harming themselves as well as others.…
